Was Mysterious Priest Really An Angel?

Read Time:1 Minute, 46 Second

I don’t believe in devils but if someone showed me an angel I might have start doing some serious thinking about what’s real and what’s not.  So, when I read this story it was with some skepticism, until I read it in its entirety, and then I really began to wonder.  Are there angels in our world, and if so how does that fit with my atheistic views?

(Newser) A mysterious priest who showed up to pray at the site of a car crash near Center, Missouri, has some of the people involved talking about angels and miracles. Katie Lentz, 19, was hit head-on by another car Sunday morning; the Mercedes she was driving flipped and she was pinned in the car, badly injured. After 45 futile minutes spent trying to remove her from the vehicle (during which some of rescuers’ equipment broke), firefighters decided to take the risky step of turning the car upright. Lentz, whose vitals were flagging, asked if someone would pray with her. “I will,” a voice said, according to local fire chief Raymond Reed. A black-clad priest stepped forward, apparently “from nowhere,” USA Today reports.

The priest said a prayer, anointed Lentz with oil, and told the emergency worker that their tools would work, Reed tells KHQA. Sure enough, they were able to extract Lentz, who was helicoptered to a hospital. But when rescue crews turned to thank the priest, he was nowhere to be seen. Making things even more mysterious: Not one of the 69 photos taken at the scene show him; further, the road had been shut down around the accident for 90 minutes, so there were no parked cars nearby. “We’re all local people from four different towns,” Reed says. “We’ve got only one Catholic church out of three towns, and it wasn’t their priest.” Lentz’s mother believes it “certainly could have been an angel.” As for Reed, he doesn’t know “whether it was an angel … or a priest that became our angel.” Lentz suffered a slew of injuries, but her condition has been upgraded.

Odd really. My God, David Bowie, emerges from retirement after 10 years and this happens. mmmmm…. 😉

Seriously though, I am not an atheist, I am an agnostic. I’d like to believe but I can’t burrow my way through all the shite.

Maybe? Just maybe?

I prefer to hedge my bets – I’ll wave at you as I go up and you go down – well, as an agnostic I might only make purgatory but it’ll be better than the hot place eh? 😉

Why are people always willing to assign a supernatural explanation to anything they do not understand?

“Evolution is too complicated for me, so god did it.”

I’ve heard hundreds of these things and not one was ever shown to be anything other than a natural event.

James I would have agreed with you until last, year. My sister-in-law, sorry, my much hated sister-in-law, decided to organize a family reunion. We had not seen a drop of rain for a month, with a week to go I started to pray for, not just rain, but violent storms to occur on the day of the “big party”. On the day we had a 10% chance of rain, not much of a chance, but lo and behold, two hours before zero hour, the heavens opened and for hours it rained and stormed. To cap off a wonderful day for me, lightening struck my sister-in-laws house. So, don’t tell me there’s not a God.

I actually had a similar experience about a year ago. I was eating n a local restaurant that featured several large-screen TVs. As normal here, they were showing a futebol match.

There were many fans there of a nearby team that was a strong underdog. The fans were obviously praying for that team. To the amazement of all, they actually won 2-1. Prayer must work as they had only defeated the other time in two out of four meetings.

So, god did it! Meanwhile, 17,000 children around the world were dying of starvation and malnutrition. But that futebol match must have been more important.

Every year I pray to multiple deities to have a largish meteor fall on the CPAC conference. So far, no soap.

Although I admire your wish to destroy any CPAC Conference, it’s also very nice to come across a person who prays, perhaps the Gods have heard your heartfelt cry but refuse to destroy half the country in order to eliminate the crazies. So, can I suggest the next time you get on your knees, ask for something simpler. A few years back, I was disgusted with the Bush/Cheney regime and the people who were bankrolling their campaign for re-election. My prayer was, “Please God let one or more of the financial backers be shot in the face.” Lo and behold, Dick Cheney obliged. A good prayer would be to make sure Dick Cheney is invited to the next CPAC Conference during duck hunting season.

Stories like this make me tear up…because he was real and meaningful to that victim no matter where he was of substance.

This article has a statement from a woman that she was the one who told the priest to go to the accident scene. Sounds to me like he simply went back to his vehicle when he finished praying with her. Hopefully he’ll contact either her family or the authorities, I think she’d probably like to thank him for his kindness.

This story is cool and a real puzzle. I hope he was an angel.
