When Your Tax Refund is Late Blame Ted Cruz

This year, due to some rather unusual circumstances, I didn’t get my taxes filed until October 15th.  It’s not a problem when you’re due a refund, even though I didn’t file extension papers.  Unfortunately, my refund will be delayed this year, by about two weeks if not more, because of the Republican engineered government shutdown, led by Texas Ted Cruz.  This will also be the case for you early filers.  So when casting about looking for someone to blame that’s who is directly responsible: Texas Ted and his feckless Republicans.

(Newser) Internal Revenue Service workers are back from furlough with news that might annoy on-the-ball taxpayers: The agency says the government shutdown will delay the date when it begins processing tax returns by as much as two weeks, meaning refunds won’t arrive as promptly as usual for millions of early filers, USA Today reports. Rather than getting going on Jan. 21, the IRS will begin between Jan. 28 and Feb. 4. The April 15 cutoff date, however, hasn’t changed.

The IRS says the delay is because the “government closure came during the peak period for preparing IRS systems for the 2014 filing season,” and it is behind on programming and testing some 50 such systems. Further, its backlog of correspondence grew by 400,000 items during the shutdown. The IRS has more changes than usual to deal with for the upcoming tax season, including gay couples filing federal returns as married couples for the first time.

Except for those of you in Texas, most of whom seem to love whacked out politicians, I would urge all Americans waiting on that Christmas money to start working hard to oppose these crazy Republicans.

@Michael Scott. Oh really, your blaming Ted Cruz for your tax refund being late? ROFLMAO, when the real reason is all the NEW tax laws by the liar and chief OblameO. Namely ACA, Ted Cruz was trying to bring attention to what our government is doing and that is applying more socialist polices. You liberal/progressives need to wake up! Ted Cruz knows socialist polices. Go live in Cuba and see what happens when you complain about the government or your tax’s, lol. Get real we need more patriots like Ted Cruz.

I am like you Mike. I rarely file until the October deadline, usually because I don’t receive all of my 1099’s in a timely manner. Plus, I am rarely due a refund of any consequence.

I was absolutely enthralled by TV news items over here in Blighty that kept saying America is shutting down. I kept thinking ‘really?, someone’s got a massive great metal shutter and they’re about to surround the entire country with it and put up a ‘CLOSED’ sign’???

Tell me, what are your new opening hours?

Sorry. Why take life seriously when it keeps biting you in the ass eh?

Sod ’em all – let’s just have a laugh eh?

Early on, I got in the habit of completing my tax forms as early as possible – as soon as all my paperwork arrived. If I was due a refund, II sent it in right away; if I owed, it went in the mail on April 15.

Prior to 1955, the deadline was a month earlier – March 15. People referred to it as the “Rides of March”.
