Why I Love My Dog More Than People

Read Time:5 Minute, 34 Second

Years ago I was given a gift by the wife of one of my friends and colleagues. It was a bit of artwork knitted neatly onto a piece of fabric and framed. The picture was a cute little puppy and under it was the saying: “The more I Get To Know Some People The More I Like My Dog.” That seemed to fit me very well at the time even though I didn’t even have a dog.

I have usually had dogs most of my life and one thing I love about them is that you almost always know where you stand. There are really no hidden agendas. I have a dog now, Rascal, and he is my best friend. He proves to me every day that dogs are definitely superior to humans because they are who they are on a consistent basis.

Take Rascal for example. I did not pick him, he picked me. He was a six-month old pup running the neighborhood when I bought this house. Every time I came home he met me at the driveway barking his fool head off. I tried to chase him off, spraying him with water from a hose, but he was determined that he was here to stay and stay he did. Soon after I became his butler, cook, and chauffeur. He decided that he did not want other people coming around the house and that pretty much has been the rule.

These days UPS and FedEx honk their horn at the street so I can go get my packages, I have not had a visit from any church members in over 8 years, girl scouts do not bother me about cookies, and at Halloween I push my empty trash cart to the street so the kids can dump it over since they can’t come to my door. The upside is that if I go out of town I don’t need to worry about someone trying to break in on my wife. Rascal makes it known to anyone who moves on my street that this is his turf and anyone wanting on it needs his written permission and he hasn’t learned to write yet.

He can be sociable though. If we want to have guests over we put Rascal in a bedroom and then bring him out and introduce him. He especially likes it when females visit since he thinks he is somewhat of a ladies’ man. The only problem is that he’s getting on in years now and he doesn’t want to go riding or walking with me anymore. Rascal has become a home body, although he still has the same flash of energy should anyone dare to tread on his land and it still irritates him when the trash truck picks up our garbage.

I took the long way to get to the point of this post, which is that the more I observe the behavior of people in this country every day, the more I appreciate Rascal. Unlike the two legged nitwits he just wants his peace and quiet and let others do their thing and he does his. Unlike the two young girls in Lakeland, Florida who bullied a 12 year old girl to the point that Rebecca Sedwick climbed a tower at a concrete plant and jumped off to her death.

It is a sad statement when a 14-year and a 12-year old can possess the the meanness and evil intent to cause this tragedy. It is even more so when, after the child died, the older girl is quoted as posting on Facebook, “‘Yes, I bullied Rebecca and she killed herself but I don’t give a f*uck.” Remarkable is it not? I wonder how a child can become that callous? It could come from a lack of positive role models, like the police for example.

The Chief of Police in Cleveland, Ohio, after a thorough investigation, has suspended 63 police officers over a long and deadly high speed chase. It seems that last November a patrol officer thought he heard a gunshot from a car that came speeding past the police station in downtown Cleveland, although a parking lot attendant thought it was a car backfiring. But for the next 23 minutes the chase was on through residential neighborhoods and interstate highways alike. It ended after the police had fire 137 shots and the driver the vehicle and his passenger were dead. The driver was shot 23 times and the passenger was shot 24 times.

Police still do not know why the car was fleeing from them. Although both men had criminal records neither was wanted and there was no weapon or cartridge casings found in the car. The disciplinary proceedings did not come down on just patrol officers. One sergeant was fired. A captain and lieutenant were demoted, and nine sergeants were suspended. So I guess the cheer was spread all around. My concern is what kind of country are we living in these days.

There was a time when rough and tumble politics simply meant digging up dirt on your opponent to win an election, or finding out where the bodies were buried, so to speak. Now days it is getting to the point of making the bodies, digging the hole, dumping the bodies, and not worrying about anyone finding them. Rafael “Ted” Cruz and Mike Lee are playing the Tea Party people like Charlie Daniels plays a fiddle – hard and hot. Neither of them were even born around the time of WWII, nor did either of them have the guts to serve their country in the military but THEY are going to stand in front the war memorials and preach. GIVE ME A BREAK.

The so called House of Representatives are not representing the people they are representing a minority of of Republicans. The Republican Party is being held hostage by a group of Tea Party radicals who do not represent all of the people, and the Speaker of the House has proven to be more interested his job than doing what he was elected to do – run the House of Representatives. What we have now is the tail wagging the dog.

So, as I said at the beginning the more I learn about some people the more I have learned to appreciate and love my dog. I know exactly where he stands on everything. I give him a warm place to sleep, medical care, good food, and snacks. He eats up anybody that dares to come on my property without my permission or his. We have a mutual understanding. Too bad things can’t be that simple everywhere else.

I haven’t got a dog but that was very interesting WAFormby sounds a lovely bloke!

But re dogs they can’t talk and answer back! They can bite and there have been some horrific incidents involving children.

It’s the fact that they can’t answer back that makes them so appealing. No dog ever asked his master, “do I look fat in this dress,” and then left him for his inevitable wrong answer. No dog ever accused his master of not being a team player, and no dog ever said, “a penny for your thoughts.”

As to the biting of children, yes that’s tragic – but I blame the parents and the dog-parents. My parents taught me from infancy, how to behave around dogs, how to approach strange dogs and why some dogs could feel threatened by kids running up on them, etc. The dog-parents too, are responsible for raising and training dogs to be antisocial.

Biologically speaking, dogs are born social animals. They fully understand – and in fact require – social interaction. They also intuitively, nurture young. Up until the most recent generations, here in America, a canine baby sitter was not at all uncommon among families. Historically, that baby sitter was often a Pit Bull. This uniquely American breed was chosen for its loyalty, paternalism and innate drive to protect members of its pack.

I understand Rick. I guess I should have included the three inside cats in this piece also.

I have to agree Bill! After 64 years of being with the human populace I’ll take an evening spent with my fur buddy cat over most people.

Oh Bill, what a wonderful story, and I have to agree that at least in some cases our wonderful fur babies are much better than people. Thanks for today’s warm and fuzzy Bill.

Yes, I am sure you do Carol. He has gotten to where if I get even close to the car he runs for the door. It is really odd but he is a real home body now.

As Dora has said, “The more I see of other people’s children, the better I love my dog.”

Bill I agree with David. This is a terrific piece, and as you know, I couldn’t agree more. All 7 of my dogs are family, and they each have their own individual quirks. I love them all.

I have often said that the only thing better than having a dog, is having two dogs. 7 must be awesome!

It is awesome David, although they can be a handful at times 🙂

Yeah, I was thinking about yours too, Mike. Life with them is so much simple and they love us despite our flaws.

You’ve crafted a wonderful piece, here. And I – as a dog lover, and perhaps just a bit of a misanthrope – couldn’t agree more. That being said, one graph stood out.

It is a sad statement when a 14-year and a 12-year old can possess the the meanness and evil intent to cause this tragedy. It is even more so when, after the child died, the older girl is quoted as posting on Facebook…

The infamous Khmer Rouge consisted largely of teenage girls. Pol Pot had discovered that they make the best soldiers. Here’s why. Adults have formed an ethical system which makes them less likely to blindly follow orders. Teenage boys tend to be rebellious and incorrigible. Pre-teens of course, are too young for the rigors of fighting. But teenage girls are perfect. They blindly follow any charismatic leader, and have absolutely no morality to bog them down in their work.

Anybody who ever went to High school or Junior High knows, there is no creature on earth more soulless – more heartless, than a teenage girl.

Sorry, but there it is.

I remember reading something similar to that and the teenage girls I have met seem to fit the bill.
