God is a Sadistic, Petulant, Nasty Dictator

Read Time:4 Minute, 39 Second

Hell is one of the most insidiously evil aspects of Christianity. It means their imaginary God is a sadistic, petulant, nasty dictator.

People are told that their life will be judged in the next. The Purpose-Driven Life, written by Rick Warren, is a very popular book in Evangelical circles, with over 30 million copies sold. He writes,

“One day you will stand before God, and he will do an audit of your life, a final exam, before you enter eternity…he will ask us two crucial questions…First, ‘What did you do with my Son, Jesus Christ?’…Second, ‘What did you do with what I gave you?’…the second question will determine what you do in eternity…At the end of your life on earth you will be evaluated and rewarded according to how well you handled what God entrusted to you. That means everything you do…has eternal consequences.”

Imagine how that affects people’s peace of mind! He sourced this idea directly from the ubiquitous Paul:

“For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad” (2 Cor. 5:10, KJV.)

“But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ” (Rom. 14;10, KJV.) Paul even taught God could read people’s thoughts:

“We are not trying to please men but God, who can read our inmost thoughts” (1 Thess. 2:4, KJV.) Paul presumed life was a mere prelude to the big judgment. No wonder he was so anxious!

Jesus threatened people with hell, and warned them to be ever on their guard:

“And this know, that if the good man of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched, and not have suffered his house to be broken through. Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not” (Luke 12:39–40, KJV.) He said all secrets would be made public in the afterlife:

“For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known. Therefore whatsoever ye have spoken in darkness shall be heard in the light; and that which ye have spoken in the ear in closets shall be proclaimed upon the housetops” (Luke 12:2–3, KJV.)

For the true believer there’s no place to hide from big brother. No privacy and no freedom. God knows what you’re thinking, he’s watching when you go to the toilet and close your bedroom door, and one day he’s going to tell everyone what you’ve been up to. This is the utter arrogance of absolute power, as promoted by the meek and gentle Jesus.

God’s going to be very busy spreading gossip in the afterlife. It might be titillating to hear what one’s neighbours got up to for the first, oh, day perhaps…but after that, the novelty might wear off.

To imagine one is under constant surveillance must be unpleasant, and for some is a source of anxiety and paranoia. A patient once handed me a fake one million dollar note with this printed on it:

“The million dollar question. Will you go to Heaven? Here’s a quick test. Have you ever told a lie, stolen anything, or used God’s name in vain? Have you looked with lust? Which is the adultery of the heart in God’s eyes. Will you be guilty on Judgment Day? If you have done those things, God sees you as a lying, thieving, blasphemous adulterer at heart.

The Bible warns that if you are guilty you will end up in Hell. That’s not God’s will. He sent His Son to suffer and die on the cross for you. Jesus took your punishment upon himself: God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. Then he rose from the dead and defeated death. Please repent (turn from your sin) today and trust in Jesus, and God will grant you everlasting life. Then read your Bible daily and obey it.”

I didn’t laugh because, for her, this was very serious. The sad thing wasn’t that she insulted my intelligence, but that she believed god was watching her that closely. I thanked her, wrote a repeat prescription for her anti-anxiety pill, and put it in her trembling little hand. I was doing my best, but couldn’t help her realize she was OK, and so was everyone else. I was pitted against fifty years of preaching from the pulpit.

A dog is content with a full stomach. A baby is happy if warm, fed and loved. Both are able to enjoy the present. Many people find it hard to do that because they’re too worried what will happen when they die.

Corrupt Christian autocrats concocted hell to control the public. For centuries churches have used the concept to profit from people, and this is one reason they’ve been so successful for so long. It’s time this stopped.

There’s no judgment in the after – life, no hell, and I’m pleased to say, no heaven; just a sublimely peaceful non-existence.

Wow. A good discussion being had here. I will, however, reserve all comment. I think it’s pretty clear where I stand on the subject of deities and their followings. 🙂 Everyone have fun but let’s be respectful 🙂

Religion drives cultures to war with each other. It’s a blight on mankind.

Hell is all through the bible. It’s mentioned in Acts, Revelations, Matthew and etc., so before you start beating on us non-believers Bill you should get your facts straight. Good job Dr. Mark and if there were a god he would be a sadistic, nasty, petulant dictator.

Then I shall stand corrected on that point, but I will still stand on the point that you religion haters and the religious preachers are one in the same just on opposite ends of the spectrum. I don’t understand why all of you don’t just let everyone believe as they wish and stop trying to convince them they are wrong. There is no doubt that there are forces greater than humans driving this earth. If you doubt that ask the people in the Philippines, or the victims of the last few hurricanes and tornadoes in this country. We have much greater things to concern ourselves with than if there is a God or not. That is out of our control. Taking care of this planet is within human control and if we don’t do a better job of that it won’t make any difference at all if there is a God or not.

FYI:

All versions of the Bible except for these three, the Latin Vulgate, the KJV and the NKJV, reject any notion of hell occurring in the original Hebrew Manuscripts of the Old Testament. Also, please especially note that the translators of the Jewish Publication Society Bible and the Tanakh/The Complete Jewish Bible disagree with the Latin Vulgate, the KJV and the NKJV by making no mention of hell whatsoever in their Bibles. If the Jews, who are experts in their own Hebrew language, do not include hell in their Bibles, then this further confirms that there is not a single word that means hell in the original Hebrew Manuscripts of the Old Testament.

Complete and Comprehensive answers to Why the Doctrine of Hell is False and Unbiblical http://www.godsplanforall.com/mistranslationstomeanhell

Jerry, I may look stupid but I am really not. The later translations of the Bible by the Catholics were meant to instill fear and godliness in the people touched by the Roman Catholic Church which was primarily responsible for spreading Christianity. That is why the Latin translation has more misinterpretations of words they relate to hell than any other Bible. The King James Version, old and new, has approximately 52 references than were pared down from the Latin version. The New Standard American Bible has none. And no, I am not a bible thumper but I rarely make statements that are not backed up by a great deal of research. I still contend that the popular version of hell came from Dante’s Inferno.

I never said I was a Christian. I just want everyone to leave everyone else alone. I don’t know if Dr. Fulton hates anyone. He may simply be seeking the truth. That is where religious people and the agnostics, and atheists have problems. There are a lot of people who are simply seeking the truth through research. It is wrong for you to judge him and you should know that.

You know Mark, I don’t think the word “hell” is actually in the Bible. If I am not mistaken what became known as “hell” was first describe in Dante’s Inferno. In any event, you spend as much energy trying to disclaim those of religious faith as they do trying to convince people like you that there is a heaven. Personally, I am satisfied with knowing that there are forces on this earth that are greater than I that I don’t understand. For example, I am still wrapping my head around Einstein’s theory of relativity and gravity, and how they actually bend light. Cool stuff. You and the religious folks are just extremist on opposite ends of the spectrum doing mental masturbation to no purpose because you never get yourself off.

The bible! What an incredible piece of work. I went to the doctor last week and they had bibles all over the waiting room. I told the receptionist they might as well have porn. Pictures of naked people are not as dangerous as the words in the bible.
