The world’s foremost chip manufacturer, Frito-Lay, is killing pets all over the globe, and they apparently don’t much care.  The list of family pets who have been suffocated by potato chip and other snack bags is long indeed, as are the numbers of letters, signatures, and other requests to Frito-Lay to, at the least, include a warning on their bags for owners unaware of the dangers.  The company has declined to do so, time and again.  Let’s do our part to help them change their minds.

Below is the heartbreaking story of Bear, a 7-year old Aussie shepherd suffocated by a Frito-Lay chip bag, and cautions to pet owners everywhere. Make sure to sign the PETITION to force Frito-Lay to at least put warnings on their products.

On June 29, 2013 my husband and I came home to a gruesome sight in our kitchen. Our beloved seven year old Aussie Shepherd was dead. He was lying on the floor with a Dorito bag still on his head. How could this powerful, 60 pound dog not pull this bag off? He got the chips down off the kitchen counter.

The dogs eat the contents of the bag. As they continue to lick the inside of the bag it forms a seal around their heads. Before they realize it, they collapse. The dogs lose their lives within minutes. Several pet owners have heard the awful “thud”, ran to their pet, only to find it too late. I had no idea this was even possible. But the material the bags are made out of form a perfect seal as the animals breath in while eating. Frito-Lay has been contacted over and over about this. I contacted them only to be told, “We are so sorry for your loss, but the chips are meant for human consumption.”

I didn’t feed them to my dog! This was an accident. If I had known how dangerous this was and how many dogs have already died I would have locked these chips in a cupboard or put them in another type of container. Look on Facebook, read the horrible stories on the pet suffocation pages that are out there. Yogurt companies like Danon have put warnings on their containers for the very same reason.

Why can’t Frito-Lay take the lead in protecting our pets? Please help me force them to pay attention to the thousands of dogs who have lost their lives like my boy Bear. Thank you so much!

There are hundreds, if not thousands of such stories out there.  Don’t let your pet be the next victim, and take a moment to sign the PETITION and visit the FACEBOOK PAGE dedicated to preventing pet suffocation.

Please help make people aware of the dangers of Frito-Lay snack bags by signing Cheryl Petersen’s petition HERE.

That being said, simple warnings on bags will help but more importantly people should put their bags out of pet’s way, including off of counter tops and etc. and inside cupboards that are out of reach.  Used bags should be immediately disposed of by cutting them up and putting them in the garbage.  Remember don’t litter! Our beloved pets like to get into everything.

Hat tips to Darlene Davies who lost her much loved cat to suffocation and to Ta Ta Tami Holloway for her important reminders on how to dispose of chip bags.

Thank you for this! We are Bear’s family and were so touched to see you share his story. Hopefully someday Frito Lay will put a warning on these bags, then other chip makers will follow. Again, thank you on behalf of Bear and his family. Cheryl, David and Gabe Petersen, Fort Collins, Colorado

Thank you for sharing this. I created the FB page and the website. But a friend has really taken it far and creating a much bigger media presence than I could. Visit this website and share it maybe in an update. http://www.preventpetsuffocation.com

I did sign, but I also think it important for everyone to remember to keep chip bags and other potentially dangerous objects out of the reach of their pets. This said, I do realize that accidents do happen! Although it’s not the responsibility of the chipmakers to care for your dog (or cat), it is its responsibility to make their products of reasonable quality for use by “normal” people. Particularly if there’s any easy solution!
I do appreciate the reminder to being more wary of my cat’s meanderings and potential pitfalls.

What? let common sense and human decency interfere with profits? Are you insane?

OMG! This just happened to my sister’s cat, like a week ago. Mike thanks so much for this. I’m going to sign the petition right now and share this everywhere.
