Australia is certainly a country that holds its own when it comes to the mighty beer garden. Whether you love to share a pint with friends on a lazy Sunday afternoon or like to enjoy regular casual date nights with your partner, there is sure to be a first-class beer garden you can head to in your local area. Read on for five of the best Aussie venues around the country in which to chill out over the summer months.

The Standard in Fitzroy

If you’re getting ready to fly to Melbourne on holiday and want to chill out at a quality beer garden, you can’t go past The Standard in Fitzroy. Hidden in the backstreets of the inner-city suburb, the long-established pub is considered by many to have the best beer garden in Melbourne.  First built in the 1860s, then rebuilt after a fire in the 1920s, the simple exterior hides a laid-back, warm and comfortable setting filled with retro furniture, artworks and a fireplace. The Standard features a rambling outdoor beer garden with a leafy canopy that protects patrons quite well even in the elements, as well as a public bar, a dining room, and a back bar for casual meals and drinks. The beer garden area holds up to 120 patrons and features a retractable roof, plenty of greenery, solid timber tables and a variety of benches scattered around for seating.

The Byron Bay Brewery in Byron Bay, New South Wales

Located on the outskirts of popular tourist destination Byron Bay, this Brewery is the home of the Byron Bay Premium Ale and has been attracting regular visits from locals, as well as travellers. The venue features a child-friendly beer garden perfect for soaking up the sunshine and fresh air in the seaside suburb. The garden area is particularly popular for lazy afternoons with friends or early evening drinks before dinner. The establishment also features the Buddha Bar and Restaurant for customers who want to enjoy a quality meal after chilling out in the beer garden, plus pool tables, several bars, plasma screens and live entertainment and trivia nights. Patrons can also take part in an informative 30-minute tour of the on-site brewery which includes a tasting session.

The Newport Arms in Newport, New South Wales

If you’re looking for a great view of the water while you enjoy a schooner then look no further than the iconic Newport Arms. One of the most well-known pubs in Sydney, this Northern Beaches stalwart has been providing patrons with sensational views of Pittwater since 1880 and is a favourite with friends, couples and families who like to visit for a drink and a meal after a day at the beach. Called “a pubgoer’s Disneyland” by the Sydney Pub Guide, the Arms hotel (located around 40 minutes’ drive from the Sydney CBD) has the largest waterfront beer garden in the country. The Garden Bistro & Bar provides customers with quality meals such as pizzas, salads, burgers, pastas and children’s meals, while throughout the rest of the venue patrons can enjoy an outdoor cinema, two playgrounds for kids, and 18 tap beers at a single point.

Portsea Hotel in Portsea, Victoria

The Portsea Hotel sits overlooking the beach, Portsea Pier and Port Phillip Bay at the southernmost tip of the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria. The hotel’s award-winning beer garden is a massive half acre in size and located right on the beach — sometimes customers can even sit and watch dolphins playing in the water nearby. Besides the renowned beer garden, the landmark hotel features a huge 1200 seat bistro, a variety of accommodation types, a sports bar, bottle shop, open fire, a la carte restaurant, and four bars. The contemporary bistro is open for lunch and dinner every day and serves up a quality menu complemented by local and national Australian wines.

Eagle Bay Brewing Co. in Dunsborough, Western Australia

A boutique, family-operated brewing company in Dunsborough, in the south-west of Western Australia, the Eagle Bay Brewing Co. creates ales that are made with fresh rainwater, malted barley, yeast, hops and no preservatives. Patrons can enjoy a range of these beers straight from the tanks on a visit to the venue. The establishment is surrounded by a working property with sheep and cattle, so in addition to enjoying a fresh pint, customers can take in the splendid rural views. The venue is home to a playground for children plus an updated menu that includes a variety of seasonal meal choices made from local produce and veggies straight from the on-site organic garden.
