Saving in Style: 6 Window Treatments and Their Benefits

Read Time:3 Minute, 44 Second

Whether it’s blocking the sun’s heat during the summer months or adding style to your home — blinds, shades, and shutters are an effective way to decorate your windows. With so many window treatments to choose from, it’s hard to decide which ones will work best for you. Here are six of the best window treatments available and the features and benefits they offer.

Plantation Shutters

There are many different types of interior shutters to choose from, but plantation shutters are ideal because they provide the perfect blend of air flow, light control, and privacy. You can buy these shutters for either single, fixed window panels with adjustable louvers or large hinge panels for sliding doors. They come crafted from durable hardwoods or high-tech synthetics, depending on the look you’re going for and what features you want.

One of the biggest benefits of plantation shutters is the reduction in energy use they provide. By offering you control over light and airflow, you can use the shutters to adjust the temperature in your home. In the summer months, keep them closed to conserve your air conditioning. In the winter, stream the sun’s warm air into your home to save on heating costs. By choosing the right shutters, you can reduce your home’s electricity bill by up to 35 percent.

If you walk into someone’s house and they don’t have any window treatments, their rooms can look bare and abandoned. If you don’t want your rooms to look like that, consider any of the above-mentioned window treatments. Not only will they add style to your home, but you’ll also save on electricity and help clean the environment.

Honeycomb Shades

Constructed from spun polyester, honeycomb shades are very flexible and are a great choice if you have windows that have unusual shapes. You can buy them in either single, double, or triple combs. While the combs give these shades a distinctive look, they also work as efficient thermal insulators by trapping air.

You can either install these shades vertically or horizontally, being that they’re light weight and offer varying levels of light control. Honeycomb shades work best in windows without molding and in contemporary surroundings.

Horizontal Blinds

Horizontal blinds are a chore to keep clean and maintain, but their adjustable louvers provide excellent light control. Being that these blinds have more slats per foot, less light leaks through the blind and provides you with more protection against sun’s heat during the summer months. Some of these blinds have a factory-applied antistatic-electricity treatment on them to keep dust from piling up.

You can either get these blinds in metal, vinyl, or wood, in many different colors and finishes. Another option is to find models with lift cords that coordinate with the color scheme of your room.

Window Shadings

Window shadings are a new hybrid of honeycomb and horizontal blinds, featuring opaque louvers sandwiched between sheer fabric panels.  These shadings are particularly convenient for windows that face the east or south, being that they tend to let more light in than other window treatments. Also, they’re great at keeping glare to a minimum.

Although they’re stylishly sophisticated, window shadings adapt to style from formal to casual. You can hang them on their own or layer them with curtains, depending on the effect you want in your room.

Roller Shades

Before the arrival of mini-blinds, roller shades were the standard for fast and simple window treatments. Because the shade offers no diffusion or direction, it isn’t the best choice when it comes to controlling light. Even if light isn’t an issue for you, then consider that roller shades offer rooms a homey feeling like a weekend cottage. Also, rollers are relatively cheap so these shades won’t break your bank account.

Vertical Blinds

If you have sliding glass doors in your house, then you’ll likely want to get some vertical blinds. You can also use these for tall casement windows, bows windows, fixed-glass windows, arch-top windows, and angular windows. Vertical blinds enhance the room’s height more than any other window treatment on the market, so they’re especially useful if you have no ceilings in your home.

You can find vertical blinds in either vinyl, metal, or fabric. They allow good air circulation and are a great window treatment choice when it comes to protecting you from harmful UV rays.

I learned a long time ago not to try and install the more sophisticated shutters on my own. Go pro!

Perfect timing. I am renovating a condo in South Side with huge windows over-looking the city of B’ham and plan on picking out some window treatments Saturday. Thanks
