Danish Zoo May Kill Another Giraffe
Just last Sunday officials at the Copenhagen Zoo decided to put down Marius, a healthy, two-year old male Giraffe, because of concerns of inbreeding. This action caused a virtual fire storm of criticism from all over the world. Now a second Danish zoo says its giraffe of the same name may face a similar fate.
Jyllands Park has two male giraffes, and it’s just gotten the OK join a breeding program. “We can’t have two males and one female. Then there will be fights,” zookeeper Janni Poulsen says, and Marius has been deemed the one “unsuitable” for breeding, and so if a female is found, Marius will likely be put down, as finding him a home would be no easy feat, the zoo says, per theGuardian. Poulsen certainly expresses no qualms: “If we are told we have to euthanize [Marius] we would of course do that.”
As for the protests that followed the death of Marius at the Copenhagen Zoo, “it doesn’t affect us in any way. We are completely behind Copenhagen and would have done the same,” Poulsen adds, telling the Telegraph, “If the breeding program coordinator decides that he should be put down, then that’s what we’ll do.”
It’s not clear if or when the zoo could acquire a female giraffe, who would ostensibly breed with the younger giraffe, Elmer. Jyllands Park adds it hasn’t yet decided if it would stage a public dissection of Marius, like the one that sparked outrage in Copenhagen.

Thanks Jess 🙂
Giraffes everywhere are changing their names, so Marius can be retired. This is totally screwed up but maybe they learned something from the last time and will do it behind closed doors. Poor bastid, unsuitable for breeding, I know his pain all too well.
I get why they can’t let some of these other zoos take the animals. They claimed that they are concerned that the other facilities may not live up to their standards. I have two beautiful German shepherds that I’m trying to home and I’m very picky, then again the alternative wouldn’t be to shoot them.
Have you tried getting in touch with GS rescue places wherever your dogs are? They will take them in, get them fostered and rehome them for you, to good homes since they are all about the big GS love. Ooops, all about the GS caring lest I be accused of loving the dogs too much in a freaky deaky way, like Jesus and his dinosaurs 😉
I’ve thought about that, but can’t bring myself to do it. Still trying to figure out a way to get them up to Ohio with us. They’re at the Georgia place now and a dog sitter comes in every couple of days to play with them, and otherwise see to their welfare, but it breaks my heart to have to do that. I could only let them go to a home where I knew for sure the people would take care of them.
Let me think on this for a second or two and I’ll get right back to you.
In some ways, I can understand. If no other Zoo wants the animal and there is no shortage of Giraffes, it does make sense to euthanize the one to avoid fights that could conceivably cripple or kill one.
To make a public spectacle out of any part of it, though. That’s outrageous. If necessary, these things should be done as quietly as possible with no publicity or public viewings.
If you had to put down your dog or cat, would you sell tickets? For shame, Denmark!
Actually several other zoos volunteered to take the original giraffe, but Copenhagen decided, I suppose, it was better to kill the animal so they could host the bizarre dismembering and feeding spectacle. I don’t get it.
