In Kansas there’s a bill pending that gives individuals and businesses the right to refuse service to gay people on religious liberty grounds. Fortunately, at least in a sane world, the bill may well be doomed, reports the Kansas City Star.

The bizarre measure, not surprisingly passed the Republican-controlled House and immediately triggered howls of protest from all over the country. For example, in the Daily Beast, Jamelle Bouie writes that it’s not a stretch to liken it to Jim Crow laws:

“Like its Southern predecessors, this proposal is meant to isolate and stigmatize a despised minority, under of the guise of some higher priority (‘religious liberty’).”

Nutty republicans notwithstanding, the measure doesn’t appear to have a chance in the state Senate. Its Republican president, Susan Wagle, said that while her members “support laws that define traditional marriage,” they “don’t condone discrimination.” In addition, the state’s business community also sided with opponents, reports the Topeka Capital-Journal, which says the legislation will have to be “substantially reworked.” In Virginia, meanwhile, a judge struck down the state’s ban on gay marriages. It’s getting crazy out there!

You know back in the old west days I think that all that lead that Marshal Dillion and Wyatt Earp shot all over the place got into the water and has screwed up the brains of everyone in Kansas. Either that or “mad cow” disease has effected all of them. Crap, maybe it is both.

They will bring it back after the election I could put money on that. This woman back last year asked if the Kansas supreme court was able to interpret laws regarding school funding because they are not elected. The woman is a certifiable lunatic. I don’t think she should be the main story because she saw the writing on the wall as far as where this could lead, the fact that the reps there voted this in is disgusting by itself. going to get a dog license, oops yer one of them “gheyz” no license for you. Need to have police or fire services, wait are you of them “gheyz” oops no service for you because I believe the buybull tells me you are an abomination. On and on it goes, much like in the past, where things were separate if you were a different color than the pasty white.

Wagle – whom the governor called a “rock star and personal hero of mine” – projected that a decision requiring lawmakers to increase school funding would push the Legislature to go to voters with a constitutional amendment to change the way Supreme Court justices are picked.

“It will be a very tough year if we’re at odds,” Wagle said. “If we get that ruling down, what we’re going to do is focus on what is the role of the Supreme Court.

“Should they be interpreting law? Should they be appropriating money?” she added. “They aren’t elected and we’re real concerned that when they do analyze how much money is appropriate for K through 12 funding, they don’t get to hear all the other testimony we hear from the other groups in the state, whether it be transportation, corrections, higher ed, all the other entities we fund.”

“Traditional marriage” Like having multiple wise as in the babble? Like keeping a few concubines on the side? Like making a wife little more than a household slave without permission to speak, act, or even think without male permission?
