Rats Deserting a Sinking Ship? Christie Aide Resigns In Face Of Subpoena
Governor Chris Christie was once the great big hope, in all senses of the phrase, for Republicans. Polls even had him in a dead heat, with some showing him ahead in a 2016 matchup with Hillary Clinton. Unfortunately for the outspoken New Jersey boss, some very bad things have happened since those heady days of presidential aspirations.
As it turns out today is the absolute deadline for a number of Chris Christie’s aides to turn over subpoenaed documents to state lawmakers. One of those aides has resigned ahead of the potential storm, the AP reports.
Although first reported yesterday, Christina Genovese Renna handed in her resignation on Friday. She worked directly under Bridget Kelly, who sent the infamous “time for some traffic problems in Fort Lee” email. Renna released a statement saying she’d been considering leaving since Christie’s re-election, so she could “pursue an opportunity in the private sector.”
Renna was Christie’s liaison to the legislature and local officials. She wrote emails relaying the mayor of Fort Lee’s unhappiness with the bridge closure, and noting that emergency responders were “having a terrible time maneuvering,” and that there was a “feeling in town that it is government retribution,” according to Reuters.
Virtually all of the 20 aides and groups subpoenaed have requested more time, and some of those requests have been granted, but the subpoenas should ultimately yield a trove of documents. One Port Authority official has claimed that there is evidence Christie knew about the lane closures—which may explain why he was booed at a Times Square Super Bowl ceremony, according to the New York Daily News.
Perhaps if the governor had listened to well known Republican adviser Joe Hagstrom he might not be in this mess.
