4 Tips to Make the Most of a Dude Ranch Vacation

Read Time:3 Minute, 15 Second

Sometimes, you’ve just got to get away. For some, that means going to the roof of a building and looking out at the city. For others, it means changing their scenery completely by going somewhere like a dude ranch. Dude ranches are the perfect place to unwind and relax after a long week at work. Here are a few ways to make the most of your vacation to a dude ranch.

Dress the Part

You can’t just take your regular clothes on your vacation. If you’re going to a dude ranch, it’s important to look the part. You’ll need some warmer clothes because it can get pretty chilly at nights. You may need to get a completely new wardrobe. Check out some men’s western workwear for some ideas on what you should bring with you.

If you plan on riding a horse, make sure that you have the appropriate attire. You’ll want a light long-sleeved shirt, a fresh set of jeans, and riding boots. You may need to call ahead and see what the ranch requires as far as boots go. You’ll need a pair of hiking boots, too, because tennis shoes just won’t cut it when you’re on the dirt trails for long hours at a time.

Prepare for Your Trip by Training

You can’t just show up at a dude ranch and expect to have a ton of fun. To make the most out of your trip, you’re going to have to go horseback riding. In order to ride appropriately, you need to train. Prior to taking the trip, sign up for local riding classes so you can make the most out of your mountain trip. You’ll forget about everything bothering you when you’re on your horse and touring around the area.

If you’re going to do some of the more extreme activities, you may need to go through more intensive training. Dude ranches offer a variety of activities, so train accordingly!

Embrace New Activities

Since you’re coming in from the city, you’re likely to live a certain type of lifestyle. At a dude ranch, the hustle and bustle lifestyle isn’t going to cut it. There’s so much to do! Let loose and go swimming, camp underneath the stars, and, if applicable, go white water rafting. You’re on vacation, so make the most of it. You never know what you’ll end up liking until you actually get out there and try it.

If you’ve got younger cowboys with you, make sure to find activities for them as well. Most dude ranches have separate activities for younger children, including fishing, swings, slides, and more. Some dude ranches offer babysitting services so you can keep your kid entertained while you take part in the more extreme and exciting activities that a dude ranch offers.

Turn Off Your Electronics

One of the most important things about a vacation is getting away from everything, and a dude ranch vacation is no different. You’re there to get away from the daily stressors of life, and having a phone on your person brings all that back to you. When you arrive, turn off your phone. If you have no willpower whatsoever, use your phone until it dies.

Since you didn’t pack a charger with you, you’re out of luck. This is how a dude ranch vacation is meant to be spent. You’re there for a reason. If you’re constantly on your phone, regardless of whether you’re by yourself or with someone else, you’re defeating the entire point of the trip. Enjoy all that the outdoors has to offer, and do yourself a favor — turn off your phone.

These are just a few suggestions to make the most of your trip to a dude ranch. Your experience depends on how much you let yourself go and truly enjoy everything that the ranch has to offer. Have you ever been to a dude ranch?
