Desperate Texas Town Pays Terrible Ted Nugent Thousands NOT to Appear
Ted Nugent is a pig, and I’m sorry to disrespect pigs in that way, but it’s the least fond appellation I can think of at the moment. Embraced by the gunners, and Godders of the Hard Right this reprehensible draft dodger, calling himself a “rocker” travels the country “playing” his brand of horrible “music” for whomever will have him.
A town in Texas was so desperate to cancel a planned performance by Ted Nugent that it actually paid him $16,250 not to appear.
The city of Longview was considering the outspoken rocker to headline its Independence Day celebration, but changed its mind after that incident in which Nugent called President Obama a “subhuman mongrel,” UPI reports.
The problem? There was a dispute between city leaders, the promoter, and the booking agency about how far along the negotiations had gotten, and ultimately the city had to pay half of Nugent’s guaranteed performance fee for breaking a verbal contract.
Officials, of course, are downplaying the “mongrel” incident: A spokesperson for the city tells the Longview News-Journal there were “a variety of reasons. Cost, structure, is it the right musical act for this type of event—a city-sponsored, family-oriented overall event.” And the mayor concurs: Nugent “didn’t really fit what we trying to put together, a family-oriented program … that probably wasn’t the right act.”
The outgoing chairman of the Gregg County Republican Party, however, disagrees: “It’s directly related to the state-level stuff,” he says, referring to the “mongrel” comment, which was made while Nugent was campaigning for Texas gubernatorial candidate Greg Abbott. “We have paid $16,000 to Ted Nugent for political correctness.”

The leaders in Longview deserve credit for recognizing “too far” when they see it. Intuitions tells me that there was a point when Nugent’s message was welcome there, but he went too far. $16,000+ isn’t chump change to a small community, but it was probably the cheapest way out of the situation. If Nugent sued, he probably would have lost, but he would, most likely, have been underwritten by someone resembling a Koch, and the community would have had to spend its own money defending.
Good on ya, Longview. Let’s hope the enlightenment continues.
If it had been me, I would have charged this astronomically arrogant ape $16,000 to make a 16-second non-speaking appearance on the stage.
And now Texas and all of Texas’s horrendous politicians get a pass, because they have, after all, canceled one horrible performer! This is not to say that every politician in Texas is horrendous. But all of the nationally known ones, are! (With the exception of Wendy what’s-her-name). Texas is not all bad! But most Texans with national ambitions ARE!
Yes they are Marsha and I’ll only give the pols in Longview a pass 🙂
