Patient Sues Docs Who Mocked His Penis While He Was Under

Read Time:1 Minute, 19 Second

I’ve wondered from time to time what the doctors and nurses talked about while I was under the influence of some very cool drugs.  After all, they have to get bored after doing colonoscopy after colonoscopy.  I mean after all, isn’t a little black humor called for?  Well, maybe not, at least in the case of those patients with cell phones and very little sense of humor.

From Newser:

So what do doctors chat about after you’ve gone under anesthesia? You may not want to know, according to a lawsuit picked up by Courthouse News Service. A colonoscopy patient in Virginia says he used his cellphone to record instructions given to him prior to his April 18, 2013, procedure, and accidentally left it on and recording. “DB” says doctors mocked him relentlessly. A sampling:

  • Dr. Tiffany Ingham is heard saying to the unconscious patient: “And really, after five minutes of talking to you in pre-op I wanted to punch you in the face and man you up a little bit.”
  • Ingham also called him a “big wimp” and a “retard,” joked about firing a gun up his rectum, made fun of his alma mater (Mary Washington College) and threatened to falsely note on his chart that he had hemorrhoids.
  • The medical team joked about a rash on the patient’s penis, speculating it might be syphilis. Then Ingham says, ‘It’s probably tuberculosis in the penis, so you’ll be all right.'”
  • Doctors also strategized about how to avoid him after surgery.

The Fairfax County patient is suing for $1.35 million in damages.

I think this is an unforgivable violation of the trust we place in practitioners. When we transfer our consciousness to their control I think we also transfer responsibility for our wellbeing and dignity when we agree to anesthesia. The Dr./patient relationship is one of respect. Clearly this person was violated, and I hope they sue the crap out of them all~ and I think their licenses should be reviewed.

This is no different from the dentist/psychiatrist/etc. that rapes. gropes or robs their patient while under their control. They robbed this person of his dignity and violated their privacy and their trust.

As far as I am concerned, you say nothing behind a person’s back that you would not say to their face. To do otherwise is disingenuous and disgraceful. And cowardly. A professional should certainly have higher moral standards than this.

Hell if you are under good drugs getting a surgery who the hell cares what they say. I would hope they talked about my firm ass and pert girls or something but that’s just me.

I don’t believe that we have a right to control what our doctors say about us any more than we have a right to control what anyone says about us. Just as I don’t care for the NSA constantly spying on us, I don’t care for private recording of individuals private conversations. Yeah, they said nasty things – even unprofessional things. But the patient was secretly recording a conversation that really, despite the fact that it was “about” him did not involve him. He got an earful, and perhaps he was motivated to investigate whether any negative actions relating to his health had been taken, but seriously, just as the thought of being able to read other people’s minds is disturbing at best, the ability to listen and the conversations of all types is disturbing. I guess it’s all a “right to privacy” issue, and if I were the doctors lawyer, that is definitely something I would stress. The fact that the recording was accidental means only that it should have been ignored, not listened to.
