Feminists, Mujeristas and Womanists: It Is Time To Unite

Read Time:3 Minute, 38 Second

Unless you are one of the few charmed women in the world that has been spared any struggle, it is time to recognize that we women are facing battles that our mothers and grandmothers fought years ago and policies being written by privileged white males. Most of us are in the process of living a full and well rounded life. In some cases you will be acknowledged for those experiences and in others you will be dismissed. I have experienced both instances in my life and neither really matters, because it always depends on the audience you have at the time.

For example, 28 years ago, I was told that because I was a pretty Latina, that I would never be taken seriously as a Feminist. The woman who told me this was a white, psychologist in her 50′s who was hosting a “Woman’s Empowerment Workshop”. Her last statement to me was, “Margarita, as a pretty Latina, you couldn’t possibly understand what it is to struggle for equality.” It was as if the history of my people was an irrelevant issue and that my looks were an instant dis-qualifier.

Aside from that, I looked at her and said, “I wish I could sweep away the kidnapping and rape trauma that I suffered while in college. You are a fraud as a “Woman Empowerment Coach.” It was all I could manage at the time, as I walked out trying not to cry. Patronizing behavior is always a challenge and as women, we often experience it from the men in our political and work worlds. It is far worse when it comes from women.

It reminded me of the attitude of many people whose ancestors were the Homesteaders of the early 1900′s, who on occasion behave as though they are of some elite status over the rest of us. It is as if in the process of the “Homestead Act”, an invisible border was thrown over us Hispanic, Mestizo, Latino and Native Indigenous people, as if we were invisible or non-existent, when we have been here for hundreds of years over our eastern immigrants. This cultural dismissal of people and Women of Varying Brown Color is rampant, even amongst our sisters in the African American community. This is particularly funny when you understand that most thinking and educated Latinos and Latinas understand that in the Hispanic culture, aside from the language, we share DNA with our Black brothers and sisters. After all, Spain itself was conquered by the Black Moors of North Africa for more than 750 years.

The only thing that matters in life is this; “Is my voice worth sharing?” Invariably, my effort to share is based on the notion that it literally kills me when I see people struggling with their inability to see the big picture or the connections. In all honesty, it is also possible that my role as my family’s “big sister”, gets the better of me! My view of things is like anything else in the world, it is always about perspective. As we attempt to unify for the sake of Equality, please maintain a sense of humor, patience for each others learning curve, respect for people’s cultural experiences, after all, the Latino community is not a monolithic community. It is complex community, culture and history. Above all, try to remember that your knowledge may not be the only authority there is on the subject.

So this is the launching of a discussion; really a series of discussions that should be focused on building respect and understanding between all of our communities, White, Black, Brown, Yellow and Red, so that we may battle successfully for the benefit of the greater good. Remember that in one of the most recent state governor’s races, Virginia, it was women of color that spoke up in loud chorus against Cuccinelli’s Vaginal Probe Agenda, among other anti-women’s choice issues. It was women of color that rose up with their white sisters and defied the City of Albuquerque, New Mexico’s ordinance regarding abortion.

Let’s talk about these things from the stand point of solidarity and progress forward. Men who support women and women’s equality are welcome too! Please read and share this article, but above all, let’s talk and unite!

So what about it is crap? The fact that women are treated as second class citizens by the men that hold the power? You scared if someone gets something it will take from you as a white older man, as seen in your profile picture?

Yeah, some of you guys have been so very oppressed from the very beginning I don’t know how you all have survived thus far. Realize this Dren, it took a woman saying yes twice to allow you to come here and spout off about “this whole story is crap.” First time she said yes was when yer daddy gave up a little sumtin sumtin to help create you and second time when she figured, yeah might as well have this baby.

You go ahead keeping on thinking men have all the answers about how women don’t deserve equal rights with them and we will tell you, we don’t deserve things like being raped and hung out on trees or being stoned because we married outside of what the patriarchy decided we should marry into or the fact that we are the ones being told, don’t wear this, don’t go there alone, don’t drink, don’t make eye contact when it should be others being told, don’t fucken rape, don’t honor kill (nothing honorable in killing) NOTHING.

Yeah this whole story is indeed crap and Mrgarita should be thoroughly ashamed of herself for writing it. I need to go look at little cute kitten photos now, because this whole week has had me in tears for most of it with stories of women being treated like dirt and it is getting way worse daily. To add to those stories I have to see ignorant comments like this one all over the place and it is more than pissing me off. yeah nothing like blocking something you don’t like in case you get a different viewpoint isn’t there? Ignorant and dumb are no way to go through life at all.

Based on one story dude? Ok. Whatever you think best. How about a little critique first? What, specifically, didn’t you like about the story?

Way to make the author’s point Cletus. Tell you what, when a bunch of women in power start saying what you can and cannot do with your manly parts and how you are worth less than a woman get back to us with your righteous indignation about how we women have it so good. If you need direction to MRA or PUA sites, they are that aways>>>> yer welcome

Great post Margarita. I hope you continue to speak what is on your mind. Rachel, consider yourself lucky.

It is not just women of color though. Generally speaking women have been relegated to a secondary seat in our society. While I will acknowledge that I truly love a beautiful woman, in the sense that they are wonderful to look at and watch, I also love a woman who is intelligent and speaks her mind. Women contribute so much more to society than just making babies, being pretty, and being stress relievers for men. Unfortunately, there are some women who actually try to hold women back. They are completely happy with being a home maker and a child raiser, and there is nothing wrong with that, but they should not try to thwart the progress of women who want another path to a satisfactory life.

Well I can tell you I’m a victim. I make half the money doing the same job the men do and that isn’t right!!!!

Well Margarita I loved your article but I must tell you as a professional woman I’ve not witnessed a lot of discrimination or gender preferred behavior. On the contrary I’m pretty lucky to work in a business where all anyone wants is your best, regardless of your sex.

Well done. How ironic that the very people who spout “liberty, democracy, equality” are the same ones that denigrate women to the status of being babymakers that should stay in the kitchen and “just shut up.”

Don’t shut up, keep stating the obvious until gender is no longer an issue anywhere at any time.

I have no idea what a Mujarista is but I’m far to afraid to disagree with you 😉

Seriously though. That is one hell of an article. Every day I come across blatent sexism against women and feel like screaming for them.

Is this not the 21st century????

…and as for being a woman of any other colour than white in Britain then just forget it. Glass ceiling? More like concrete.

As a white middle aged man with many prejudices I still feel ashamed at how women are so often treated in Britain.

I do my best to get it right and, I’m certain, often fail but at least I try!

Mind you, when a woman screached abuse at me for holding a door open for her I was, and remain, confused.

Sorry…the ‘afraid’ bit was meant ‘tongue in cheek’ as you come across as a lady of powerful will, opinions and determination.

Much like my wife as it happens.

I like you.

‘Power to the women!’ I say….after all, us men have made a fair old pigs ear of it up to now eh?
