France Spends Millions To Save Hamsters

Unlike America, Europe cares about its natural environment and is prepared to spend a king’s ransom to preserve it.  In this case preserving means the 10 inch long furry little critter with little round ears known as the Great Hamster of Alsace.  The endangered rodent has drawn official attention before, reports the Guardian.

Europe’s top court has pressured Paris into saving the diminutive creature.  In the current project, farmers will grow grains or plants amenable to the little creature (like alfalfa and wheat). “The aim is to find innovative … practices to preserve the animal without harming farmers’ activities,” said the regional council in a statement.

Industrial-scale farming, suburban sprawl, and freeway projects have contributed to the hamster’s dwindling population—which is now between 500 and 1,000, RT.comreports. It dipped as low as 161 in 2007, when the European Commission urged France to preserve the little furball; an earlier effort in 2000 went nowhere when French farmers refused to replace maize with less profitable crops, the Guardian reports. Now, France will have to pay fines of hundreds of millions of dollars if it can’t boost the hamsters’ population to around 1,500.

Now picture this happening in America.  A bill is introduced to the Republican Congress by a democrat.  Within minutes there is a firestorm of laughter and derision, as the money hungry Republicans refuse to entertain such a notion, preferring instead to leave the unfortunate hamster to its fate.  That’s the difference between a civilized society and the US.

Britain’s Environment Agency spent over 2 million pounds creating a wetland bird sanctuary last year.

If they want me to carry on paying my taxes they’ll carry on doing such things!
