Hard Rock Cafe Boots Ben Affleck For Cheating at Cards
Even the mighty fall, and in the case of Ben Affleck it was a hard fall indeed, at least where his gambling career was concerned. The squeaky clean Actor, director, citizen of the world, and now card cheat was banned for life at the Hard Rock Cafe because he was caught counting cards in blackjack, reports TMZ.
As if that weren’t enough an alert went out to all the major casinos on the Strip advising that Affleck uses a rudimentary technique known as “perfect basic,” reportsRadar. “He has been observed playing blackjack at multiple Las Vegas Strip properties, and is suspected of moving his wagers with the count,” says the alert. The celeb, a longtime gambling aficionado, was reportedly escorted from Hard Rock on Tuesday night when his ploy proved too obvious.

Counting cards isn’t cheating. It’s outwitting the house at its own game. The fact of the “rule” against counting cards is simple. The house doesn’t want to pit itself against really smart, capable players, and when someone who is that much better than average comes along, they ban and (ATTEMPT TO) humiliate them.
As the former executive director of the New York Council on Problem Gambling, I say to Ben Affleck, good on ya for beating them at their own game, BUT be very careful about how deeply you get into any gambling, because gambling addiction is no different than coke addiction. If you’re that good already, you are in grave danger of being addicted. And, as you can see, in the world of “gaming,” NOBODY likes winners. They will make it their business to ensure you lose in more ways than one.
The world of casinos is one of those corporate enterprises that get to make up the rules as they go along. Unless you are using some type of mechanical device to aid you it is not cheating it is that you are beating the odds that the casinos have set. I have always used a form of card counting with a a form of under and over betting. However, I am always at the $5 and $10 tables so they pay no attention to me. I think it is the other way around, the states are allowing the the casinos to cheat to preserve their odds.
I do that…or I did for a while. The Victoria Casino in London banned me too. Not that I was a ‘gambler’ as such. A pal was a member and took me a few times. I made quite a lot of money on Blackjack – my favourite game. They didn’t like it and I was banned on my 5th visit.
Didn’t bother me except they served free beer. DAMN!
I read it as he was just banned from the blackjack tables and not everything.
Technically, counting cards is not cheating. The casinos don;t like it and make it against the house rules because it can cut into their profit margins and they will not permit that.
Considering how heavily casinos stack the odds against any player, and will even insert a “mechanic” as dealer if someone is getting too “lucky” they deserve a bit of their own back.
If card counting is cheating, every bridge player in the world, if they are any good at all, is cheating. (My mother was a life master)
The casino is just pissed because they couldn’t take enough of his money.
I agree James.
