PETCO Dumps All Chinese Dog Treat Products
There’s long been a mystery around Chinese dog treats and the reason why they are killing so many dogs, 1,000 to be precise along with a handful of human illnesses.
The concern over the treats, in particular those made in China, is enough for Petco to take action, the company says in a statement. Now, the company is becoming the first national pet chain to halt sales of all dog and cat treats made in China, NBC News reports. “We know the FDA hasn’t yet identified a direct cause for the reported illnesses, but we decided the uncertainty of the situation outweighs the lack of actual proof,” says CEO Jim Myers.
The deaths have been a matter of concern for years, and the FDA recently released startling new figures: Jerky treats have been associated with 1,000 dog deaths and almost 5,000 illnesses in dogs and cats, along with three human illnesses. Two of the humans were toddlers putting unusual items in their mouths, while one was an adult who apparently ate dog treats; why he or she did so isn’t clear,Modern Farmer notes.
Another human, however, seems to have survived munching on a dog treat with no ill effects: The owner of a Chinese factory implicated by NBC ate one himself to prove it was safe. The best bet, per Modern Farmer, is just not giving your pet any dog jerky.

I haven’t actually ‘got’ a dog…my neighbours dog has adopted me. I buy doggie treats from Sainsburys and they know me well….they know I’d blow the place up if they made my Lacey sick!!!
You’re an animal lover indeed Norman.
I make my own dog treats with an old recipe from somewhere. I don’t like some of the crap they put in the pre made ones and this lets me know what I am giving my dogs to eat. Yep they are spoiled but I am ok with that. here is the recipe, very easy not long to bake and my dogs love them.
1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
1/2 cup wheat germ
1/2 cup melted bacon fat
1 large egg
1/2 cup cold water
Throw everything in the bowl, mix it till you get a nice firm dough, roll them out to shapes you want and stick in a 350 degree oven for about 20 minutes. Turn them over and turn the oven off, let them sit an additional 5 minutes or so and they will get a little crispy for them. I also add parsley and some mint every other batch because it’s like a breath fresh for them. You can add a little peanut butter or carob powder but no chocolate or raisins, those are bad for animals. I save the bacon fat I cook the husband’s meat in and freeze it till I am going to make these.
