Rookie Congressman Makes Complete Fool of Himself At Hearing

Read Time:1 Minute, 8 Second

Contrary to popular opinion you don’t have to be smart to be a US Congressman as demonstrated by Florida Republican Curt Clawson, a newly elected Tea Party favorite making his first national headline for all the wrong reasons.

dumb

In a serious gaffe spotted by Foreign Policy, Clawson spoke to two US officials testifying before a House panel as if they were foreigners, not Americans:

I’m familiar with your country; I love your country.  Anything I can do to make the relationship with India better, I’m willing and enthusiastic about doing so.

At one point, he requests cooperation from “your government,” and, after a few seconds of silence, Biswal makes a diplomatic save: “I think your question is to the Indian government,” she said. “We certainly share your sentiment, and we certainly will advocate that on behalf of the US.”

It’s not clear whether Clawson, who was elected last month to replace Trey Radel of cocaine infamy—realized his mistake at that point. “Of course,” he said with a smile. “OK, let’s see some progress.” Some reaction:

  • Marc Caputo, Miami Herald: “They don’t call us Flori-duh for nothing.”
  • Phillip Bump, Washington Post: “One of the most awkward exchanges you will ever see, inside or outside the Capitol.”
  • Scott Martelle, LA Times: His post on the “cringe-worthy” video is headlined, “How not to start your congressional career.”

I just watched the video, and it isn’t even the mixup that was so awkward as the smugness with which he responded to their attempted correction. I think he was still oblivious. I’m still cringing, and may be for days.

Another grand example of my republican party owning and exploiting the ignorant. Sadly for America most of these people are ignorant by choice due to apathy, laziness or bigotry. But still good for my republican party and our corporate benefactors. I honestly think we could parade Bozo the Clown under an American flag and giant crucifix that we could win 90% of elections.

Bozo’s colors are red white and blue. Thanks for the encouraging word MadMike.

Actually have a post in the works but been so damn busy lately I haven’t had time to proclaim Jesus loves us Americans that were born here and blesses us while ignoring the children of sinners who’s parent’s crime was giving them birth in Latin America.

I would have loved to have been sitting next to him when he said that. To just turn to him and use the Ron White line, “You just can’t fix stupid.”

Did anyone expect brilliance from a Tea Party favorite?

Any bets on how long it will take for the TP (yes, that TP was on purpose) people to start making excuses and trying to spin doctor this?
