Chihuahuas Overrun San Francisco

Read Time:57 Second

(NEWSER) – California’s Bay Area has a pint-sized problem roaming its streets: Thousands of stray Chihuahuas, reports the San Francisco Chronicle. Hugely popular on the left coast, the dogs were overbred and now crowd animal shelters—making up half to three-quarters of dogs surrendered—and spill over onto the streets. “There’s such an overabundance of these dogs, what do we do with them all? It’s heartbreaking,” says the head of a rescue group.

Oakland has taken to flying hundreds of Chihuahuas each year to places like Idaho, Washington, and even Canada, where they’re sought after. But life on the street is tough on the little guys, who face starvation, poisoning, and an average lifespan of just three to five years. “If they’re trained and socialized, they can be great dogs,” says the rescue chief.

So, if you’re looking for a fun, loving and loyal pet San Francisco just might have one for you.

Oh come on! Chihuahua’s are cute!!! Well, all right, you might as well take your hamster out on a leash but they are cute aren’t they?!

I know they aren’t Greek but I didn’t write the bloody song! 😉

We have two “rescue” chihuahuas. Both mixes. Great dogs. These are not too small. 10 pounds each, so they are “real” dogs at heart.

Not sure this blog recognizes me, and I’m tired of having to login after telling the system to remember me. So if I come up as anonymous, this is Jim Moore.

I love animals period, but these may be among my least loved animals. I do hate to see them in such bad shape though.

Ankle biters!

Have you ever owned one of those little dogs, you know, one of those over-bred dogs, one of those dogs that just shakes and pisses all the time?
