Mountain Lion That Attacked Boy Will Be Killed

Read Time:1 Minute, 18 Second

People destroy their natural habitat; building homes, parks, industry, shopping malls, and etc., on land that was once the territory of many wild creatures, including mountain lions.   A few animals survive in the very few wild areas that remain.  Naturally, people just can’t leave them alone either, building tracks and trails so they can walk and enjoy “nature.”   I don’t blame the animals for the occasional, and very rare attacks.  I blame the people for trespassing and placing their own lives at risk.  Sadly, it’s the creatures that always lose.

From Newser:

Mountain lions don’t attack humans often; such encounters occurred about 13 times between 1986 and last year, the Los Angeles Times reports. But the father of a 6-year-old in Cupertino, Calif., says one recently “came out of nowhere and attacked” his son. “A 6-year-old child in no way can defend himself against a mountain lion. He was very lucky he was with his parents,” says a fish and wildlife official.

The boy is now being treated for puncture wounds and his life isn’t in danger, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Today, authorities will send hounds on the animal’s trail. The creature will be killed for public safety reasons if its DNA matches that of the saliva found on the boy’s clothes. Local hiking trails have been closed in the area.

Let’s think about this. You bring your family to a public park near an urban setting
and your 6 year old is attacked by a mountain lion and bitten.
What choices does a parent do?
A) Let the mountain lion behave as it does in the wild.
B) Save your child and other potential victims from being eaten by a
hungry mountain lion.

Correct Bill but the ‘B’ should be move the mountain lion to a safe haven not shoot it. It’s as much right as we have to be here don’t you think?

Ridiculous! The mountain lion behaved, as it should, like a mountain lion and it’s going to be killed for public safety reasons?????

I’d rather tell ‘the public’ they’ll be killed by a mountain lion if they’re dumb enough to go there – and laugh when they are.

More reason to like animals more than humans today.

I get SO MAD at situations like this! How DARE we kill a mountain lion for acting like a mountain lion? I realize that evolution counts on “survival of the fittest”, and that implies that, as the fittest, it is our duty to prevent others from surviving. But if that involves killing off all of the others, we will soon discover that that particular path leads to our own destruction, too! As most people know, if the carnivores kill off all the prey, then the predators die, also. No, we don’t prey on mountain lions, but the whole thing is a metaphor! We ARE influencing evolution, by our very nature and “intelligence” (I use that term advisedly). We need to control our own actions!
The individual mountain lion was being a mountain lion. Unless we have decided that mountain lions overall are not a species with which we should share this earth (which I believe is a really, really, shortsighted decision) it’s incredibly unfair to destroy the mountain lion! It being that we are going to influence evolution, we definitely need to educate ourselves better, and stop allowing selfish and useless to the earth as a whole considerations rule our decisions!
