Oscar Pistorious Guilty of Culpable Homicide

Read Time:59 Second

(Newser) A South African judge has found Oscar Pistorius guilty of culpable homicide, or negligent killing, in the shooting death of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp and declared him not guilty of murder and premeditated murder. Judge Thokozile Masipa—who said yesterday she found Pistorius negligent—ordered him to stand before she delivered the verdict.

The sentence for such a crime is at the judge’s discretion, and it can range from a suspended sentence and a fine to years in prison. Sentencing will be announced at a later date.

Pistorius was also convicted on one of three unrelated firearms charges. The judge ruled that the athlete was guilty of unlawfully firing a gun in a public place when a friend’s pistol he was handling discharged under a table in a restaurant in Johannesburg in early 2013—weeks before Steenkamp’s killing. Pistorius was acquitted on two other gun charges, including a count of firing a gun in public and a count of illegal possession of ammunition in the Pretoria home where he killed Steenkamp.

The only person who really knows is Oscar himself. We may think “He killed her in a rage” and he may well have done so – why was she ‘locked’ in the bathroom? Odd. Why ‘lock’ the door?

Still. We will never really know the truth and, of course, it may have been a tragic accident – in which case he shouldn’t be locked up at all if you ask me.

Only Oscar really knows – and even when he ‘says what happened’ we aren’t sure we believe him.

He’s either extremely lucky to get away with murder or he’s extremely unlucky to lose a girl he loved and serve time on top.

Who knows?

He sure wasn’t the nice guy he showed his soccer fans. Those stories off his rage was very surprising to me , not that it’s unusual for famous people to have a public persona and a entirely different private one but his explosive rage against various people was so at odds from such a sweet guy.

I hate to second guess the Judge but what was she doing in the bathroom if not to escape him. And yes, I know South Africa has a big crime problem but she was crouched in bathroom.

At least, he was found guilty of something. So sad for the family, actually both of them but hers especially.

Exactly what my wife said. Why was his girlfriend in the bathroom with the door locked? Why lock the door if you there’s only two of you there? Because you are trying to keep the other one out.
