New Law Forces Texas Abortion Clinics To Shut Down

Read Time:1 Minute, 28 Second

(Newser) All but eight of the remaining 21 abortion clinics in Texas were forced to shut down overnight after a federal appeals court upheld the state’s tough restrictions on abortion. The 5th Circuit Court of Appeals decided that the law’s requirement for abortions to take place in expensive ambulatory surgical centers did not impose an “undue burden” on women seeking abortions, even though the only such centers are in major cities, reports NBC.

Lawyers for abortion providers argued that the law would leave some 750,000 reproductive-age women, mostly near the Mexico border, more than 200 miles away from the nearest abortion clinic, reports the Austin American-Statesman.

“Today’s ruling has gutted Texas women’s constitutional rights and access to critical reproductive health care and stands to make safe, legal abortion essentially disappear overnight,” says the president of the Center for Reproductive Rights, whose lawyers represented the abortion providers. A spokesman for state Attorney General Greg Abbott, who is running for governor, called the decision a “vindication of the careful deliberation by the Texas Legislature to craft a law to protect the health and safety of Texas women,” reports theNew York Times, which notes that Texas had 41 abortion clinics before parts of the law came into effect last summer. Wendy Davis, Abbott’s Democratic opponent, issued a statement saying, “Women should be able to make these deeply personal decisions without the intrusion of politicians like Greg Abbott, who supports making abortion illegal even in cases of rape and incest.”

They have to close till the court case works its way through the courts. I wonder if they will make other types of clinics do the same thing, like plastic surgery ones or is it just the fact women can go here and get reproductive assistance the thing that makes them crazy. At least the republicans don’t want to execute the women that get abortions, oh wait…yes they do.

Not all women will be Mike. Those of us who could afford a plane ticket somewhere would be okay, it’s the poor and low income women I feel for.

Oh dear Jess. My daughter got pregnant in 1968 as a result of a college “gang bang.” She went to the butchers, even though we would have flown her to NY, and she died. She died. It’s not just the low income women, it’s also those who are just ashamed, for something that wasn’t their fault. Her name was Jess by the way and every time I read one of your comments I think of her. You are a good and decent person, as was our Jess.

Yes, we need to make it where it is nothing to be ashamed of, if you are assaulted too. It is on the person who did the assaulting, not the victim. Like my husband’s grammy and my mother in law are always saying, we fought this shit in the 50s and 60s I cannot believe we are still fighting for a woman to control her own body. I am so very sorry for what I can only try to imagine… your great loss.
