Political Poppycock I Say
For those of you who are unfamiliar with the term ‘poppycock’ it is merely a polite way of saying ‘what a load of bollocks’ or something of that nature. Politicians tend to spout ‘poppycock’ on a regular basis – except me of course now that I am entering politics and will always be right. The delightfully named Ed Balls of Britain’s supposedly ‘left wing’ Labour party is an excellent exponent of talking ‘poppycock’ although, in his case, talking ‘balls’ would be far more apt. I say ‘supposedly left wing’ as, frankly, our ‘mainstream parties’ – Conservative, Labour and Liberal Democrat are – often indistinguishable from each other if not in policy terms then certainly in appearance.
The biggest load of ‘poppycock’ I’ve read in a long time came from a left wing (that’s British left wing by the way which is far different to American left wing) critic writing for a ‘left wing’ newspaper – The Guardian.
He poked fun at the immensely moving field of ceramic poppies currently surrounding the Tower Of London calling it “empty, prettified and toothless” along with describing it as “the sort of monument UKIP would like”
What this ‘left wing’ idiot only managed to prove with his facetious opinion is that the British political ‘left’ are utterly unable to identify with the public mood or to understand why the display has touched millions of visitors.
It also explains why UKIP are about to ‘clean up’ at so many elections around the country.
This characters comments are merely in tune with our British political class who are equally out of tune with ordinary people.
Democracy? A government of the people for the people? Not unless or until UKIP are elected.
Now, if any British ‘left wingers’ happen upon this article I am not looking for an argument nor a ‘name calling session’ with you. I am looking for a serious debate regarding ‘the lefts’ apparent inability to see beyond their noses that they are very much a minority in their views and the long silent majority are beginning to stir. Given the current rise of UKIP that, surely, is a point you would have to concede (that’s the rise of UKIP incidentally, not the seeing beyond the end of your noses bit)
Given the fact that a right of centre party are gaining such popularity with us Gadarene swine as you ‘lefties’ so clearly view us, precisely how do you think you can ‘reconnect’ with us then? Are you suddenly going to acknowledge the disaster of your immigration policies? Are you going to acknowledge that we have a democratic right to be given a referendum on the EU?
Will you join the decent people in pointing out to the critic at The Guardian that he has successfully offended most of the country? He certainly has a right to his opinion and a right to express it mind you even if his opinion is offensive to most of us – unlike you ‘lefties’ us ‘righties’ actually support freedom of speech accepting we might not always like what we hear. Why do you ‘lefties’ constantly throw insults at us such as ‘racist’ or ‘xenophobic’ instead of holding an intelligent discussion?
I have so many questions for the British ‘left’ but, sadly, I know they will never answer.
I suppose I’ll just have to live with the insults. After all, I defend the ‘lefties’ democratic right to insult me. It’s called ‘freedom of speech’. It’s something the British left secretly hate you know.
I also made the point that I was referring entirely to ‘Britain’s left’ who are not very similar to America’s in my experience.
So there 😉
I’m ‘down’ on any politician who doesn’t do what they promised, left or right or centre.
I have noticed even more, of late, that the ‘left’ in Britain seem incapable of civilised discussion and almost invariably resort to ‘name calling’
That used to be very much the provinance of the ‘right’.
Personally I am ‘apolitical’. I’ve always believed in socialism (left) with a free market economy (right).
I’m a socialist with a conservative heart – or the other way around.
Both sides have good ideas but neither side will ever compromise and, sooner or later, will tell you where you stand.
Some of my pals think I’m virtually a commie and you think I’m a tea bagger….oh well….I’ll put the kettle on then 😉
Norman is a Tea Bagger I’m afraid. Always down on the Left and high on the Right.
I have family in the UK and I’ve asked them about UKIP and it is indeed Britain’s version of our Tea Bagger nut jobs. As a result they have no credibility with me Jess.
Some would agree with you and your family – I’m still undecided as it happens. I like what they say most of the time but I’m worried that many far right people seem to have dropped off the radar of late. Where are they? Quietly joining UKIP’s ranks? It is a worry.
From everything I have read and researched about UKIP Norman, it’s the tea party but they drink beer. My husband and I bought two of those poppies because they will be helping Help for Heroes I think it is called, the equivalent of Wounded Warriors here, a veteran’s group that will get some money is all I know and why we bought them. I’ve seen photos of the display and it looks beautiful, I really like how they made it come out of the tower like a river of blood. I’ve seen it since they first started and how spartan the red was and now they have crowds upon crowds wanting to see it and waiting hours in line to do just that.
UKIP are listening to peoples concerns. Mainstream politicians whether left or right or centre need to realise that is all they need to do but, to date, they don’t, hence the rise of UKIP.
