Gunman Killed by Police After Wounding Three at FSU
School shootings have become part of our lives, and while we shake our heads and wonder what motivates people to do such things, we don’t think it can happen to our children. I thought that until today, when my daughter called me to alert me to the fact that some lunatic started shooting people at the Florida State University library early this morning. My thoughts immediately went to my granddaughter, a student at FSU. Fortunately she was uninjured, and we breathed a sigh of relief. Sadly some parents were unable to do that as they are now keeping vigil at the hospital bedsides of their wounded children who weren’t doing anything to deserve such violence.
(Newser) Florida State University police fatally shot a gunman at the campus library early today in a shooting that left three students wounded as hundreds studying inside fled or took cover in panic. According to university newspaper FS View, the gunman opened fire around 12:30am on the first floor of a library and was shot dead after officers confronted him and ordered him to drop his weapon; he instead fired one shot at them and they unleashed a volley of shots back, Tallahassee Police spokesman Dave Northway says. Students who had been in the library described a chaotic scene in which they heard shots, followed by students either barricading themselves in parts of the library or taking cover.
While police did not say if the wounded were shot by the gunman, senior Sarah Evans from Miami said she was inside the library and heard a male student say he had been shot. When she looked at him, he was on the ground with blood spreading on his pants leg. Hours after the shooting, detectives could be seen inspecting the body of the suspected gunman, who was lying facedown at the top of an access ramp just outside the library. A gray baseball cap lay near his head. FSU has canceled classes today.
Remember: tell those you love that you love them, and make sure to do it often. Life is fragile and we never know what lies around the next corner.
It’s difficult isn’t it? Regardless of that ‘amendment’ thingy – right to bare arms? – what can you do? America is a land of guns and the bad guys have guns so if you start trying to restrict gun ownership then who will have guns? The bad guys only.
If I lived in America I would have a gun. I hopefully wouldn’t ‘lose the plot’ and shoot someone but, I admit, I’d feel a damn sight safer living there if I had access to a gun.
I doubt it’ll ever stop. Tragically.
Happy to hear your loved ones are safe.
Our thoughts are with the families of those who were not so fortunate, including the family of the now deceased perpetrator. May they all find peace.
