President Obama And Illegal Immigration
Now, before you start, I know I don’t live in America and I am clearly not American. There is no dispute there. I generally shy away from saying anything overly critical about America or Obama because A) I love America and Americans, B) I happen to think highly of Obama and C) Well, it isn’t really any of my business is it? Still, being a resolutely ‘mouthy’ northern English man there are certain things that I can’t, frankly, contain myself over and Obama’s drift into the world of ‘loony tunes’ regarding illegal immigration is one of them. Whilst the British are historically and traditionally ‘slow to anger’ against authority, if the British Prime Minister did what Obama has done regarding illegal immigrants even we, the calm, accepting, tolerant Brits would probably revolt and overturn our ‘powers that be’.
Once you manage to meander your way through the political waffle it appears that people who had, and have, no right what so ever to be in America and benefit from being there are to be pardoned, for want of a better word.
Excuse me? So, let’s get this straight. All the illegal immigrants – that would be the one’s who have never paid any taxes for starters, have probably worked ‘cash in hand’ and never contributed to the country in any way shape or form are to be allowed to stay and carry on.
Look, I know it isn’t that simple. Illegals in this category will have to ‘register’ and start paying taxes and so forth but, to me, that is hardly the point is it? Is it? Maybe it is – but to me it isn’t.
Now I know that all you chaps and chapesses over there in the good old USA will have little difficulty ‘tearing me apart’ on the details of all of this but save your breath eh? – or, your typing fingers if you will. I’m not, and have never been, a believer in the ‘oh poor illegal immigrants who have come here from poverty’ brigade. I do sympathise with people who live in abject poverty but I don’t and I have no intention of ever doing so. Too many immigrants into any country and the infrastructure breaks down and everyone’s standard of living deteriorates. Helping the ‘poor immigrant’ should only be done if it doesn’t adversely effect the ‘living standard’ of the indigenous population.
Of course, that is only my opinion but I guarantee you that if the indigenous population find their living standards deteriorate and there is high immigration – illegal or otherwise, the immigrants will be blamed and trouble will ensue. Countries need to ‘look after themselves’ and ensure ‘their people’ are fine and only then can countries look further afield to help other countries including allowing immigration.
For example, to move to slightly safer ground, a recent study has found that less than 12% of the Somalis living in Britain are in regular work. Now it is pretty certain that some will be illegally here given our porous borders but many may well be legally here – although quite why we should have so many Somalis in Britain is a mystery really. Asylum seekers? Refugees? Well, hello! How many ‘safe havens’ have they passed through to get here then?
Anyway, that’s almost beside the point. If only about 12% of Somalis are actually gainfully employed then why haven’t we chucked out the 88% who are scrounging off our country? Kick them out and send them packing illegal or otherwise. I’m sorry, but I’m not paying MY tax to keep a load of Somailis with a roof over their heads.
I can just imagine the nightmare scenario that could actually occur. Labour and Ed ‘Gromit’ Milliband sneak into power at the next general election and give an amnesty to every illegal immigrant we have – and there are literally thousands and thousands. Labour would do that too – on the grounds that the now legal illegals would probably vote for them.
I admit I just don’t ‘get it’. I do like and admire Obama. I do think he is a genuine and caring human being – a strange anomaly for a politician – but really? Let illegal immigrants stay when the American people have been paying their taxes and ‘doing the right thing’ whilst the illegals have been – well – illegal?
I caught Obama on TV the other night saying something about ‘caring’ and ‘separating families’ if illegal immigrants are sent back whence they came. Sorry? What’s to stop their families born in America going with them when they are kicked out? Those children were born in America but only because their parents arrived illegally in the first place. Perhaps an ‘illegal’ married an American citizen? I suppose that might be a bit trickier but check his or her record. If an ‘illegal’ hasn’t committed any crime and worked hard and ‘behaved’ then, perhaps, an amnesty followed by American citizenship is the right way to go but a ‘general amnesty’?
Illegal’s in Britain often commit crimes against British citizens such as robbery and/or rape and/or burglary and so forth. Not all do certainly but those who do should be arrested, charged, locked up for whatever period of time the courts believe appropriate and then, on release, thrown out of the country regardless of whether they have family born here. Their ‘family’ can then either go or stay as they wish.
A ‘caring attitude’ to illegal immigrants is fine and dandy but only if the illegal’s in question have ‘behaved’ themselves. If they haven’t then a ‘general amnesty’ is not only awarding the immigrant for illegally entering the country but awarding them for behaving in a criminal way to boot if they have.
I’m not surprised there’s a right old ‘ding-dong’ going on over there about this. There would be a right old ‘ding-dong’ in Blighty too if our politicians did anything so inordinately dumb.
I’m amazed this hasn’t cropped up on MMA already.
Anyway, I’m off to sort out my gardener who only works ‘cash in hand’ and keeps muttering something about Mogadishu as he digs holes to plant my plants. I know he isn’t an illegal immigrant because I wouldn’t ever employ one of those.
Excuse me a moment, the wife is calling me.
Sorry love? What do you mean ‘An immigration officer is at the door?’
Oops.
I’ve just noticed…when I comment as ‘Stormin’ I am a strange green thing and so is Anon! Hey Anon! We have a strange green thing in common!!! 😉
As I have long suspected, you may have been taken over by an alien as in “Attack of the Body Snatchers.” (cue theme from
Twilight Zone”)
She wouldn’t want to come near my strange green thing 😉
May I suggest some penicillin or other powerful antibiotic?
Pope or no pope, condoms are also strongly recommended in the future.
🙂 🙂 🙂
As I see it, a large part of the problem is caused by allowing the children born in the USA of parents that are here illegally to be citizens. The phenomena of “anchor babies” is not new.
I have personally seen women in labor waddling across the border in Nogales, AZ to have a baby in the USA.
IMHO, that should not be permitted. If you are in the country illegally, without a green card, the baby is not a citizen. End of Story.
You right wing fascist you! How dare you be right! 😉
Yep even we normally liberal assholes can be a bit conservatives at times. Especially when it makes good sense.
Perhaps if the USA were not outspending the rest of the world combined on military toys, they could even afford a decent health care plan. Not one like the recycled Romneycare ACA.
Go suck on a lemon !
Only one soaked in gin thank you very mush 😉
The two things you mentioned are the keys. “Paying taxes” and “Vote for them.”
It isn’t about compassion of keeping families together. It’s about money and political power.
My thoughts precisely old bean. Thank you.
Thing is Norman, the public here wants a path to citizenship for people by a wide margin. What they are not liking is the fuckwits in congress not doing a damn thing about it and only giving it lipservice so imo Obama had to do something away from them. Now they are bent because he has done something the GoOpers use as a wedge issue. They are terrified because shortly there will be no call for old, crusty, white southern, Protestant men who vote republican to constantly be voted into office. The world around the good ole boys is changing and they don’t like it and want to fight it tooth and nail.
Very valid point Jess. At least he’s done something I suppose which, hopefully, is better than doing nothing.
Norman you’re hung up on the immigration issue. I would love to see more about life in Britain. There’s plenty of information out there about immigration both pro and con.
Perhaps you are right although, certainly in Blighty, immigration is virtually the main talking point politically speaking even though our politicians keep trying to move elsewhere topic wise.
More about life in Britain coming your way Rachael!
He so is ! Obviously has a problem. He doesn’t speak for me and I’m a patriotic Brit.
Hello Anon! I wouldn’t dream of having the audacity to speak for you dear. I speak for me and, that is probably quite enough 😉
