Does British Democracy Really Exist?

Read Time:4 Minute, 51 Second

Firstly, yes, it does. British democracy that is. We are a western democratic country and we do live under the rule of democracy. Certainly it is far from a perfect system but it’s a damn sight better than the Russian’s, Saudi’s or the Iranians have got so, despite its faults, we value it, vote for the political party we desire to be in government and, ultimately, keep our fingers crossed that they don’t completely fuck it up.

democracy

Through experience, however, we know they will fuck it up, we just hope they don’t entirely, completely and totally fuck it up. We hoped that when Blair’s Labour party came to power. Sadly they did totally and utterly fuck it up but you make your vote and you take your chance.

At Britain’s last general election nobody won, or, if you prefer, everybody lost. The British people were so fed up to the back teeth with the lot of them that nobody was elected to govern our democracy.

Despite this we did end up with a government. It was a coalition government between the Conservatives, who not enough wanted, and the Liberal Democrats who virtually nobody wanted.

Still, on the plus side, more people voted Conservative than Labour – primarily I suspect as Labour had virtually bankrupted Britain and, whilst we will usually forgive our politicians their little foibles, being fond of our democracy and all that, virtually bankrupting the entire country was a wee bit more than a ‘foible’ so Labour were clearly a ‘no-no’.

The Liberal Democrats shunted about deciding who to form a coalition government with, eventually settling with the Conservatives – which was weird really as they have far more in common with Labour than Conservative. Mind you, if they’d formed a coalition with Labour at the time there really might have been a revolution here as Labour were hated by so many after bankrupting us (virtually).

In the near future Britain must, once again, suffer the pain of listening to politicians bullshit as they try to get themselves and their political parties elected at a general election.

Unusually, the ‘pollsters’ are significant by their absence. There is a long tradition in Britain of ‘swingometers’ and so forth along with earnest individuals telling us why certain political parties will be forming the next government. No such pollsters are lifting their heads above the parapet this time as, frankly, nobody has a bloody clue what’s going to happen.

Perhaps one reason that nobody has a clue what is about to happen politically in Britain is because we are almost past caring.

What are the options then? A Conservative majority government? No chance. A Labour majority government? No chance (or God – or the deity of your choice help us if Labour really managed it)

The most likely outcome will be a ‘hung parliament’ with either Labour or Conservative forming a coalition government again. This time the lunatic Liberal Democrats will thankfully not be involved as, if nothing else is certain, their virtual ‘wipe out’ is almost guaranteed.

The Conservatives would have to team up with UKIP assuming UKIP do remotely as well as they are supposed to do. If they don’t the Conservatives are screwed.

Labour would team up with the Scottish National Party (SNP) who appear destined to almost wipe out Labour in Scotland. This would be very problematic as the SNP have no moral right what so ever to vote on issues specific to England – or Wales and Northern Ireland come to that – so a Labour government shored up by the SNP would probably spell severe unrest in England at least.

Also, Labour are denying our democratic right to have an ‘in / out’ referendum on the European Union so, if the Labour / SNP outcome happens expect serious civil unrest in Blighty – and damn right too!

The best (of a bad lot) outcome would be a coalition between the Conservatives and UKIP. A ‘right of centre’ government that puts Britain first and allows us the vote to leave the EU – which, almost assuredly, we would do if and when the mad bastards actually give us the democratic right to vote on it. (If the vote is to remain in the EU then so be it, but we ARE entitled to this vote)

Of course, the downside to a ‘right of centre’ government is that they always seem to want to ‘privatise’ everything and the end result is almost invariably disastrous for those ‘most in need’. Whilst ‘hitting’ the scroungers and so forth is to be desired, it never happens without the ‘genuine’ getting ‘hit’ as well.

So. The best outcome of Britain’s general election? Probably a Conservative led coalition with UKIP. Not entirely desirable by any means but given the alternative of Labour and the SNP, infinitely preferable.

The best chance of a Conservative / UKIP government is, slightly oddly, the left leaning Green Party who, it appears, may take further votes from Labour thereby balancing the Conservative losses to UKIP.

The best way to describe what is going to happen in the forthcoming British general election is to say this :

Nobody has a bloody clue.

Purely through curiosity I have attempted to discuss the forthcoming general election with an assortment of friends, family and acquaintances. The outcome of such attempts have generally led me to believe that we, in Britain, are finding it increasingly hard to give a damn.

That, in my opinion, is entirely the fault of our politicians and also, I believe, the greatest threat to our democracy.

The ‘people’ give up on the politicians and the political parties and a ‘political vacuum’ ensues.

Something will fill the vacuum.

It may be something particularly unpleasant Britain. Be careful that you keep caring or, one day, you may wish you had.

damn man, you have to make your mind up Norman. Conservatives are like our righties here, they want to give all the money to the richest people there and fuck the rest. UKIP is the tea party with beer and smokes and conservatives at heart, just like our righty rightertons. You have got to come to terms with the fact you are a righty and be done with it.

Goodness me Jess you’ve certainly hit the nail on the head.

Glad you get it – unlike Norm – but then he is a UKIP supporter – even admitted it!

What a complete load of sphericals!
Well we know your allegiance is UKIP so no more comment is necessary really but you can’t get away with your ridiculous analogy.

Did Labour Party cause the world wide recession ? It was the bankers you wally backed by the Conservatives their friends! We’d have been in a worse state if they had been in power. The reason Labour didn’t win was because of Iraq and the fact so many people opposed the war. As for a Conservative UKIP coalition God help us if that was ever to happen!

I agree you’ve really lost the plot!

Hello Anonymous. I went round the bend years ago love 😉

Political vacuums are invariably filled. It’s what fills them that can be problematic. I’m not saying we have a British Hitler waiting in the wings but if we behave like ostriches and assume it’ll all work out it just might not.

Really Pim? Don’t you think people are fed up to the back teeth with the lot of ’em?

Actually, you are right…it ain’t that bad really….it’s Britain not Iraq or somewhere… 😉
