Guess How Many Americans Don’t Believe Climate Change is Real

Read Time:1 Minute, 13 Second

Climate change is real, and only an idiot would think otherwise.  You don’t need science, just take a trip outside your door, or, if you live in California, try to water your lawn.  For the past several decades things have gotten hotter, and hotter, and failing to notice it is placing your ostrich head it the ever warmer sand. That being said, you might be shocked at how many “idiots” are really out there.

Now let’s do a quick experiment: Pick a scientist at random, and he’ll inevitably say climate change is real and influenced by humans, but that’s because they’re scientists and they’re smart.

The Pew Research organization found 87 percent of scientists in the American Association for the Advancement of Science will say so climate change is real and caused by humans. By contrast, only half, that’s about 50% , of U.S. adults surveyed believe the same thing. The rest believe, the other fifty-percent, either that climate change is real but natural, or that there is no solid evidence to support the existence of climate change.

Pew covered other topics in science as well. Take evolution: 98 percent of AAAS scientists say humans evolved over time, yet only 65 percent of the general population is on board.

To see where else the public disagrees with science, check out Pew’s full report.

I watched a documentary the other night called “Jane’s Journey” which was about Jane Goodall. It traced her life from the time she had started her work on chimpanzees until the present and her transition from fighting for chimpanzees to now fighting for the environment. I usually do not get into these things very much but Goodall is a remarkable woman who, at the time of making of the film, was traveling 300 days a year talking with people about the environment. The film has some remarkable scenery as it shows some of her travels to Greenland and watches the collapse of huge glaciers. I would encourage anyone who has the chance to watch it.

By the way, like many people, I sometimes get her confused with Diane Fossey who studied gorillas and was killed during her studies by poachers. Jane Goodall makes light of the confusion in the film.

I see no point in saying anything to them as they either believe God is responsible for everything and our actions don’t matter or as MadMike says they’re stupid.

When I meet a denier of climate change, I like to ask these questions.

Are you saying that the polar ice caps are not shrinking?

Are you saying that the glaciers are not retreating?

Do you deny that the records of average world temperatures are not showing a steady rise?

Do you claim that the ocean levels are not rising?

All of these things can be independently verified. Only the most intentionally ignorant can sate that they are not true.

I admit that human intervention is probably not the only cause. Climatology is a very complex subject. When you consider how much energy over seven billion people use ever day and that the creation and use of all energy creates heat, it is inevitable that the cumulative effect can be noticed globally.

Yes, there is also the effects of atmospheric pollution, but the heat pumped into the environment may be even more of a problem. Even “clean” energy becomes heat when used. Electric motors become hot when used. Making those motors creates heat. Energy can be neither created nor destroyed, only changed in form. The final form is heat.
