The Latest Unbelievable Republican Economic Theory

Read Time:3 Minute, 55 Second

Mississippi has chronic unemployment. For something like forever, unemployment in Mississippi was the worst in the nation. In 2010 it went up past 10 percent. That is high. For a few months it was higher than 11 percent. There was no state anywhere that had a higher unemployment rate. Alabama was close for a couple of months. Then the 10 percent in Alabama began to go down a little while Mississippi still climbed.

But Georgia came to the rescue. In 2014, Republican Governor Nathan Deal of Georgia did what everyone thought was impossible. He raised Mississippi from absolute worst unemployment to only second worst. In September 2014, Georgia bumped Mississippi and went to the head of the line.

Unemployment looked like it was just beginning to get better throughout the nation, but in Georgia it was going up and up. Mississippi went down to 7.6 percent. Georgia unemployment went up past 8 percent.

Georgia’s Nathan Deal did what any politician in charge would do. He offered explanations. It wasn’t some sort of industry fall off, like coal in Kentucky. It wasn’t bad weather or a demographic shift. It was not an educational shortfall with Georgia workers finding themselves without requisite technical skills. It wasn’t some sort of regional downturn.

As Nathan Deal explained it, the problem was certainly not the conservative economic policies of Georgia. Not with an enlightened chief executive leading the state administration. Nathan Deal is about the best there is. You can ask Nathan Deal or anyone who is employed by him.

Yet the economy in Georgia was the worst in the nation. How could it be? Governor Deal described it as an irony.

It’s ironic that in a year in which Republican governors are leading some of the states that are making the most progress, that they almost, without exception, are classified as having a bump in their unemployment rates. Whereas states that are under Democrat governors’ control, they are all showing that their unemployment rate has dropped. Now, I don’t know how you account for that.

– Governor Nathan Deal (R-GA), September 18, 2014

He was right about states led by Republicans doing much worse than states led by Democrats. Could the obvious cause be true? Could Republican policies be a big mistake that ought to be changed? Oh no, foolish mortals.

Nathan Deal had a better answer.

It was a conspiracy. Not a conspiracy that actually targeted states for unemployment. It was a conspiracy of numbers.

Maybe there is some influence here that we don’t know about. But when you say that California is in a better position in terms of unemployment than the state of Georgia, there’s just something that just does not ring true.

– Governor Nathan Deal (R-GA), September 18, 2014

It was an interesting theory. Unfortunately, a prime part in the high unemployment rate had to have been played by one major conspirator. That culprit was Governor Deal himself.

On Thursday, the state labor department reported that Georgia’s jobless rate jumped from 7.7 percent in July to 8.1 percent.

In July, Georgia had the second worst jobless rate next to Mississippi. But Mississippi’s rate slipped to 7.9 percent in August.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution, September 19, 2014

The Georgia State Labor Department, Governor Nathan Deal’s Labor Department had issued an unemployment report that was identical to the report issued by the great federal conspiracy.

Other Republicans have explanations for bad state economies. Governor Sam Brownback of Kansas is blaming his fellow Republicans, the ones in the state legislature, for not raising taxes on food and mortgages, then finding ways to get more taxes from the elderly and the unemployed.

But Georgia Governor Nathan Deal’s conspiracy theory had to have been the most creative. Nobody else would have the nerve to say that a grand conspiracy had produced phony unemployment figures.

It doesn’t take a bad economy to produce that sort of conspiracy. Good economic news qualifies, too.

President Obama’s policies seem to have produced the best unemployment rate since the Clinton administration. Former Texas Governor Rick Perry has an explanation for America’s dramatically improving economy. The explanation may sound familiar.

When you look at the unemployment rate today, that’s not the true unemployment rate, it’s been massaged, it’s been doctored.

Former Texas Governor Rick Perry, January 26, 2015

Forget Supply Side, throw away the Laffer curve and the napkin it came in on.

The new Republican theory, the explanation that fits every circumstance can fit this one too. Obama’s economy, the economy finally achieving a dramatic surge upward, is all a conspiracy.

[…] Mad Mike’s America: Republican governors insist the national unemployment is suspiciously low while their state’s own jobless rate can’t possibly be that high. Either way, it’s an Obama conspiracy. […]

The real republican response is because Mississippi and Alabama are 2 states that take far more of a percentage of tax dollars from the federal government than most other states it’s only natural their people are miserable. They’re mooches that my good friend Mitt Romney decried in 2008 and was pilloried for by bleeding heart liberals.

The important thing is we cut the funds they receive so the moochers will be so miserable they will be forced to find work or move making the state’s numbers look better.

Like Reaganomics, that these states are red it only means that sound republican governing and economic theories haven’t had time to work so their conservative representatives are forced by Obama to take all this largess. It’s all President Obama’s fault.

It’s really simple you know: they don’t accept failure, because doing so means they have to accept responsiblity.

If you think libs don’t lie then youre wrong becuase they do all the time. Governor Deal is a smart man and he knows his business and he is right that libs want to put down the party of people. I do not see where your proof is here. Do you have proof of this accusation?

Ronnie, do you think that Johnson killed Kennedy? How about Saddam Hussein flying planes into the WTC? Moon landing? Filmed on a Universal back lot? LOL. Ronnie I bet you believe all of those things.

It’s true you know, what folk are saying, and that’s America has gone over the edge, and it started with Ronnie Reagan. I’m very much afraid it’s going to get much darker before we see light again.

Your comments are welcome “ME” as long as you don’t insult our readers with ad hominem attacks. A difference of opinion is fine, and welcomed, but personal attacks are not. Peace out…..

“Me”, one thing you might want to consider is exactly where on the Republican scale you place yourself. I have never been a total Republican hater, per se, until they let the right wing nuts take over. True Republicans can be negotiated with because they have minds that are business oriented and do not have a slash and burn mentality. Unfortunately, there are not too many of those around these days. Since Nixon’s “southern strategy” kicked in in 1972 the Republican Party has been co opted by the religious fundamentalism to the point that, at least in idealism, they resemble ISIS (no comparison intended in terms of violence). But I long for the days when there were true Republicans and true Democrats running the country. Just a few extremist on each side to keep every one interested, but the big boys were more moderate and could sit down, talk, and work through problems that were best for the country.

I can’t imagine living in the Deep South. What total nonsense this is. Those Republicans are trying to destroy America with one silly idea at a time. Very good article Burr.

Rachael, it is not very good down here I can assure you. Alabama is my home state and I love it for the geography, but the politicians down here are as stupid as they can possibly be.

Thank you for your comment, “Me”

Let me summarize our respective arguments:

My position is that Republican logic is flawed, that conservative defense of failed policy is muddled, and that conservative attacks on sound policy are hopeless. I offer two examples and invite a response.

Your position is that I am simple minded because I am biased, and that I am biased because I am simple minded.

I find your attacks on my level of maturity to be especially well reasoned. Your line of argument is certainly compelling.

Thank you again for your comment.

I disagree that the “world is waiting for Obama to leave.” On the contrary, my family in the UK, and my friends in Germany and Italy, tell me their countries love the guy and are envious of us. Now I agree that racists and Republicans want him to leave, but beyond that…I don’t see it dude.

Burr what is unbelievable is how simple minded you are…. you are biased beyond all credibility….Normally we are liberal in our youth but then mature when we get older…. plainly you did not….

I laugh at all you bleeding hearts… you always think you are so smart… Dumb as posts ! I use the links on this site fairly often but can easily use another…. All your points are political talking points they are not logic as you fool your self into believing….

What’s the matter man? Can’t handle an intellectual discussion? Based on how you wrote your comment I can understand that. No worries. Not everyone can be smart.

“Me” I think you actually need to get involved in an intellectual discussion so that you will recognize one when you happen to stumble into it. Obviously that is a rarity for you so I will do you a favor, I will take out my brain so we will be even in an intellectual discussion. Now, run along and go play in the traffic like a nice little idiot.

I’m also from Canada, and everyone up here thinks Me is a first class moron.

Many people mature as they get older, but Me went straight from whining crybaby to senility with no period of growth or thoughtfulness in between.

Anyway, we are sorry he is bothering you, but he wandered off from the nursing home and his family is worried.
