Why Liberals Are Whining About ‘American Sniper’

Read Time:2 Minute, 29 Second

I saw American Sniper and thought it did a fine job portraying the realities of war and post traumatic stress related to war.  It does not, as some liberals are wont to say, encourage people to start shooting Muslims unless watching Road Runner would encourage people to jump off cliffs holding a bomb that says ACME.

There are some liberals who are complaining that the movie portrays all Muslims as evil terrorists. Well, in this movie, Chris Kyle, played by Oscar Winner Bradley Cooper, shoots only Muslims who are, regardless of age, evil terrorists, an enemy hell bent on killing Americans any way they can.  Others complain that Kyle regularly called the bad guys savages. He did because this is what they were, and this is the nature of war.  I can guarantee we called the enemy a lot worse back in the day and they deserved every less than fond appellation.  No doubt they had some choice descriptors for us as well.

In the meantime the whining liberals did little to hurt revenue as American Sniper won the box office this weekend, bringing in $90.2 million in three days—a feat that broke January records, USA Today reports. Meanwhile, the Chris Kyle biopic is making headlines in other ways:

  • In order to put on the 40 pounds he needed to play Kyle, Bradley Cooper ate an insane amount per day, Australia’s News Network reports. “He was eating about every 55 minutes or something like that, and I want to say it was about 8,000 calories a day,” writer-producer Jason Hall tells People. Plus, “I think he was working out four hours a day for several months.”
  • Not everyone is impressed with the film: “American Sniper kind of reminds me of the movie that’s showing in the third act of Inglourious Basterds,” tweeted Seth Rogen yesterday, referring to a fake Nazi propaganda movie featured in the Quentin Tarantino flick. Others have similarly criticized the movie for glorifying war, Sky News reports. Interestingly, Rogen’s The Interview was recently criticized for trying to make assassination funny, and that critic compared the controversial comedy to American Sniper.
  • Kyle’s widow, Taya, talks to People about how much she and the couple’s two kids miss the former Navy SEAL, who was murdered in 2013. “I was madly in love with him and still am,” says Taya, who is portrayed in the movie by Sienna Miller. The movie was already in the works when Kyle died, and Taya recalls a time director Clint Eastwood took her aside, “a little choked up,” and told her, “I just want you to know that your story has my heart.” She has her own memoir coming out May 5.

Are you a liberal who enjoyed American Sniper for the movie it was, a biopic of Navy Seal Christopher Kyle?  If so let them know on the social media of your choice and link back to us.

The movie – I have yet to see it – is about an American Sniper – I’m clever me – isn’t it? Soldiers, providing they observe The Geneva Convention and so forth on active service, are not responsible for wars therefore there is absolutely nothing wrong with making a movie about the exploits of a soldier in a positive light even if he killed people.

A soldier in war tends to kill when called upon to do so.

Only politicians are responsible for wars.

David, I appreciate your honesty. I have not yet seen the movie because I just do not go to theaters anymore. As far as liberals hating the movie, I have simply ignored them just like I ignored them back in the sixties when I got out of the Marines. There was no point in trying to explain things to them then and there is no point in trying to explain things to them now. Like Chris Kyle I, and hundreds of thousands of other young men, were brain washed and trained to be weapons for this country. It was drilled into my head that the most dangerous weapon on earth was a Marine and his rifle. However, we did not get to make the decisions about which war to fight, in which country to fight, or which people to kill. The politicians made those decisions and pointed us in a direction, and sent us there. When you get to that place it becomes a kill or be killed scenario. There is no way you can explain that to anyone who has not been there.
As for the movie, there is one thing I am sure of because it is an Eastwood film. It will be more about the human beings than about the war and the toll that the war takes on the people. Eastwood has become the best director in Hollywood by being able to stay focused on the humanity of the characters. His prior war biopics “Letters From Iwo Jima” and “Flags of Our Fathers” were outstanding.

Mad Mike. You can’t buy a system like mine. You have to build it.

But this post reminds me of a very important lesson I learned as a teenager. During the ’70s, we in the antiwar movement bore a lot of anger towards the vets, and the soldiers over there doing the fighting. At many of the protests, we disrespected soldiers. People – yes, regretfully myself among them – spat on soldiers returning from ‘Nam, and called them baby killers.

It wasn’t for several years, that I began to realize how vicious and wrong minded that behavior was. I have since, apologized to vets, either through writing, or actually in person.

It’s one of the only things in a wild and very sordid life – that I take NO pride in, and in fact, deeply regret.

It is not the soldiers who need to be held to task for fighting this nations wars – justified or not. We – the “Liberal” antiwar activists – need to take our anger out on the yellow-backed politicians and their corporate masters, who use war for profit and exploitation. Not the brave and selfless individuals who do the actual fighting and dying.

Haven’t seen it but my husband did and said it is a really good movie. Eastwood can do no wrong in his eyes. I don’t want to see it because it’s just not my kind of movie going treat.

Well, I haven’t seen it yet. I need to wait until it comes out on DVD, so I can watch it on my 80″ DLP and my 3Kw sound system. No teenagers screaming into their cell phones.

That being said, as the MMA unofficial and self appointed movie expert – conversations with chairs, notwithstanding – Clint Eastwood can’t make a bad movie. I look forward to seeing it.
