Bill O’Reilly, Cow Hormones, and Soy Milk

Read Time:5 Minute, 12 Second

The connection between Bill O’Reilly, cow hormones, and soy milk might seem tenuous at first glance, but if you’ll bear with me, we’ll get to it.

Soy milk is not milk in the sense that cow’s milk is milk. Soy milk comes from a plant. You pound soy beans into dust and add water.

Cow milk comes from … well … cows. A while back I listened to speculation that one of the bravest people in prehistory had to have been the first one to agree to try cow’s milk. “You want me to suck on what?”

You get the drift, right? Cow’s milk is not soy milk and soy milk is not cow’s milk.

A lot of farmers inject a hormone into cows to increase milk production. It has some negative effects on the cows. It also increases a human hormone in milk. Some studies indicate that if you take in a very large amount of that human hormone, your chances of getting cancer seems to go up. This has caused a lot of controversy..

There are no studies on whether there is any difference in cancer rates between people who drink milk from injected cows and people who drink milk from cows that haven’t been injected. If there were studies, it would end a lot of the controversy.

There is a study that shows that folks who drink soy milk have the same increase in cancer related human hormones as the increase from milk from injected cows. So Monsanto, who sells the cow injections to farmers, insists the milk must be as safe as milk from uninjected cows.

Get the logic here? Let’s compare uninjected soy milk, which is to say ALL soy milk, with actual milk from cows that have been injected. I think we might do a study comparing steak sauce with arctic snow.

A couple of reporters at a FOX News affiliated television station in Tampa, Florida went to work on a report about the hormone. Monsanto put on some pressure to change the report. The station essentially decided to allow Monsanto to compose half of the news report so it would be fair and balanced. The reporters objected. The original report went unaired. The television station fired the reporters.

The reporters were kind of hot about it. They went to court as whistleblowers and also made a complaint to the FCC, saying the station had no right to lie on the air. The court case was about whistle blowing. One of the reporters won, but the verdict was overturned. The other reporter lost because the jury found that the reporter was not turning anyone in for actual law breaking.

Fox News is in a bit of a contradiction over accuracy. They were having a bit of fun reporting on NBC’s reporter, Brian Williams.

His apology was so weak and lame and contained inaccuracies.

How much does this suspension, as opposed to, you know, a termination has to do with the fact that NBC News doesn’t have the deepest bench?

There are other people at NBC who knew that chopper in Iraq was not hit by an RPG as Brian Williams said many different times.

Then came Bill O’Reilly.

Missed Moyers in the war zones of El Salvador, the Falkland conflict in Argentina, the Middle East, and Northern Ireland. I looked for Bill, but I didn’t see him.

I covered 4 wars, I was down in El Salvador in the 80s, then I went over to the Falkland Islands war, covered it from Buenes Aires and Montevideo. It was dangerous, I almost got killed a couple of times.

Because I was in a situation onetime in a war zone in Argentina in the Falklands where my photographer got run down and then hit his head, bleeding from the ear on the concrete and the army was chasing us and I had to make a decision, and I dragged him off.

Fox News is backing O’Reilly on most of his falsifications. They should.

Brian Williams is a serious journalist who has an obligation to meet a journalistic standard. Bill O’Reilly is, well, Bill O’Reilly. With the exception of his most devoted disciples, nobody expects him to be truthful.

And there is another, more basic, difference.

Brian Williams reports to a news organization that takes its reputation seriously .

Fox News, on the other hand, features some guests who argue that American Muslims should be targeted, because the internment of Japanese-Americans after Pearl Harbor worked well, while other guests disagree and propose that all Muslims ought to be killed. Fair and balanced.

Fox News regularly reports items as fact that even cursory check reveals as false. They let us know that President Obama had in custody, but released, the terrorist who then went on to found ISIS. Turned out to be false. Voter fraud was reported as massive, although actual investigation showed it to be as close to non-existent as can be. An Obama orchestrated Benghazi cover up? Crazy talk on ebola? How about the scandal that turned out to be the Obama family eating at an expensive restaurant?

Many of the rumors of the Florida lawsuits are factually wrong. Fox Cable News was not directly involved. It was only a Fox affiliate. Fox never admitted to lying on air. Neither did the affiliate.

What the local news station did suggest in the court case they filed was that any violation of the FCC policy against “rigging and slanting” the news was only policy, not a law or a rule or a regulation (Eleventh Affirmative Defense), and that “the FCC does not intrude upon issues of editorial discretion or the exercise of news judgment.” (Fifteenth Affirmative Defense)

The court case of the local Fox station did not admit to lying. They only insisted on their right to lie.

They should not, cannot fire Bill O’Reilly. He was only following the established standards embraced by Fox and its affiliates. He should not admit to lying.

He should just insist on his right to lie.

This was a bit confusing but I got the gist. A liar can’t lie when he’s amidst liars.

So Fox News and O’Reilly are consistently lying? I doubt this is news that will be nominated for a Pulitzer prize.
