Just over 26 percent of U.S. children say they’ve seen or directly experienced violence using weapons, such as guns, knives, sticks, or rocks, according to a recent study.

Researchers also found that one in 33 children surveyed said he or she had been assaulted directly by lethal weapons.

These numbers are particularly alarming when their mental health implications are considered. Children exposed to violence are more likely to experience depression, anxiety, and aggression than children who aren’t exposed to violent incidents, the study reported.

Released by the journal Pediatrics, the study surveyed more than 4,100 children between the ages of two and 17.

Parents or guardians answered questions for children under age 10, while 10- to 17-year-olds answered independently.

Not only in America. So much of the world is overwhelmed with violence, some of which is America’s fault. Despite the old Coca Cola tv commercial, we are NOT the world. Millions and millions of kids grow up witnessing the most gruesome things imaginable, over and over again and many are sucked into participating as child soldiers. Billions of people would smile at our dismay.

Of course there’s a difference between a kindergarten kid throwing something at another and witnessing a shooting and I think that bundling disparate acts together makes the statistic here less frightening, but stop and think how much violence kids see in video games and on TV. It’s massive.

We can argue that they know the difference between real and fake, and we can argue that somehow acting out in a video game gets rid of aggression harmlessly, but I have my doubts and especially with marginal personalities.

Only in America.

I’m not surprised at all. Staggering statistic nonetheless.
