America’s Indigenous Peoples Day

Read Time:3 Minute, 2 Second

There appears to be an increasing groundswell of opinion in America to scrap ‘Columbus Day’ and replace it with ‘Indigenous Peoples Day’. In other words, instead of celebrating the discovery of the ‘New World’ by Christopher Columbus who didn’t actually discover it, the celebratory day would be directed towards America’s indigenous people.

SEATTLE — The Seattle City Council voted unanimously to now recognize what was once Columbus Day as Indigenous Peoples' Day.

Now I don’t claim any expertise regarding Christopher Columbus but I seem to remember somewhere in the depths of what passes for my mind that America was actually discovered by some chap from Norway?

Anyway, that’s wrong too because you can only actually ‘discover’ somewhere if there isn’t anybody already there on the quite reasonable grounds that they have already ‘discovered’ it simply by being born there.

This leads me to a puzzling point. How does it feel, America, to be an ‘occupying force’? You are you know – well, you aren’t if your reading this and you’re Sioux or Navajo or Apache or what ever but, unless you are directly descended from an Indian tribe you are an alien.

How do you actually feel about that? I am curious.

Whilst you can’t possibly be held responsible for this situation as you weren’t around in 1495 or when ever it was. The fact of the matter American’s is this. Your country isn’t your country at all. You are descended from people who stole it from the indigenous people.

Still, I won’t hold it against you as I do like you and, as I said, it’s hardly your fault is it?

Might I suggest that as you’ve elected your first black president the election of your first indigenous President would be absolutely awesome. Just a thought. I have so few so please treat it gently.

Another puzzlement crosses my mind related to this possible ‘Indigenous Peoples Day’.

I, personally, think it’s a damn good idea and I’d like to see such a thing in Australia and New Zealand too. Mind you it isn’t the Australian’s fault they nicked their country from the Aborigines. After all, most Aussies are descended from people who were sent there as Prisoners of Mother England which is where the term POMMIE comes from.

Just like America it would be harsh in the extreme to blame today’s Aussies for the stealing of someone else’s country however accurate the statement may be.

Ultimately Australia’s Aborigines had their country stolen away from them and so did America’s indigenous tribes.

You’re just a bunch of tea leaves you lot aren’t you? 😉

My extra puzzlement relates to Britain.

I find it quite extraordinary that a sensible civilised country like America – I will rephrase – a sometimes sensible and civilised country like America can, quite rightly, suggest an ‘Indigenous Peoples Day’ whilst such a call in Britain would result in accusations of racism and xenophobia.

It would you know. A call to celebrate ‘us’, the Brits, the one’s who have always, ancestrally, been here (and yes I know all that guff about the Romans and the Picts and the Celts and the Vikings) in other words, the white Anglo-Saxon types, would cause a right royal rumpus amongst our guardians of the politically correct left.

Odd really.

America can call for an ‘Indigenous Peoples Day’ and be rightly applauded for the sentiment. An individual Brit, let alone the nation, could call for the same and be tarred as a racist xenophobic lunatic.

Strange world eh?

Anyway Americans. When are you going to give it back then? 😉
