Iran: Who Do You Trust-Obama or the Republicans?

Read Time:4 Minute, 27 Second

It has been a while since I have bothered all of you folks with any of my nonsense but there is a point where the top of my head will pop off if I don’t unleash a bit of my wrath on the stupids of this country. I would ask you you to guess who the stupids are but I would rather you have to think about something when I ask a question. That one is simply too easy.

I have to wonder which schools some republicans attended to learn their history. All of them have stated with so much clarity how untrustworthy the Iranians are in the current negotiations.

A fairer question might well be is how much can the Iranians trust us and our allies in this deal. Yes, I will concede that Iran has been sponsoring many of the Middle Eastern terrorist groups and they, at this point seem to have no love for Israel.

During WWII Britain and Russia made the decision that they needed access to the oil fields of Iran who had declared neutrality during the war. So Britain and Russia both invaded Iran and opened what became known as the Iranian Corridor to gain access to their oil. They were also joined by the United States in their quest to secure the oil flow for the allies.

The Iranian leaders at the time had appealed to the United States for help but all that President Roosevelt would offer was a statement that it did seem that the British and Russians were infringing on the sovereignty of Iran as a neutral country.

During this upheaval, and in an effort to show the allies that they were not pro Germany, Iran also provided safe harbor for as many as 2000 Jewish people fleeing from German tyranny. Despite those efforts and their bid to remain neutral the allies dictated who would be the leader of Iran, formerly Persia.

Now enters the Shah of Iran who proved to be every bit as brutal as Saddam had ever thought about being. Anyone who opposed him was quickly dealt with by his death squads. While his people were struggling to recover from the war, the Shah basked in luxury and was treated as royalty by the allies. He received some of the best medical treatment in the world right here in the good old USA. The people of Iran were pretty much left to there own devices.

During this same period the allies, along with the UN, had decided to set up a state for the Jewish people. They drew the boundaries of the state of Israel believing that it would be a point of stability in an otherwise unstable region of the war. At the time no one foresaw the grow of the power of Israel as fast and as big as it happen. The Palestinians who had previously lived on that land simply had to live with the decision regardless.

To say that we and our allies had betrayed the Iranians would be an understatement. Persia had been a great nation and empire long before the country was even thought of coming into existence. They and other Middle Eastern Countries like Pakistan and India had been conquered and occupied by Britain for many years. Eventually the British began to turn loose of some its colonies, but Russia continued to build the Soviet Union which led to the cold war.

Though we maintained an embassy in Tehran there was a constant build up of tension because of the United States support for the Shah of Iran. This of course boiled over with the overthrow of the Shah’s power and the taking over of the American Embassy. Americans, who, naturally did not know of the wheeling and dealing that had taken place, were condemning attack on the American Embassy and the taking of hostages. It is, however, this last act, on which the Republicans and many Americans base their fear, hatred and suspicion of the Iranians. In my eyes it could well be, “Hey pot” said the kettle, “perhaps it’s time to sit down and have a conversation.

Please do not misunderstand me. I am a red, white and blue American through and through. My four years in the  Marine Corps proves that. I still believe that I am sworn to protect this country from all enemies, both foreign and domestic. But there is another saying we had in the Corps: no one hates a war more than the warriors themselves. It is easy for a presidential candidate to stand at a podium and threaten war. It is easy to cheer that idea, unless you are one of those who are going to be on the battlefield facing the bullet.

While going through basic training our drill instructor would regularly ask us if we joined the Corps to die for our country. Foolishly, we all answered, “Yes Sir.”” He would then shout , “NO” “You join the Corps to make the other person die for his country.” In the end that shows us,  if we can negotiate a treaty that even slows down a potential enemy, we have gained time.  Kennedy proved that.

In the end, either sooner or later, Iran will have the bomb, that is inevitable. All we can do then is welcome into the M.A.D club.

Iran is not to be trusted, but nor are we. It will end up just like you said in your last sentence Bill: Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) or just MAD…..

Timmy that has kept everyone safe for over sixty years now. Everyone seems to forget that if Iran gets the bomb, which Pakistan, India, Israel, already have, in addition to us and Russia, that to use it would be an end to their existence. In 1962 Kennedy was pressure constantly to invade Cuba, which would have been far easier than attacking Iran but he chose diplomacy. Despite a screw up in communications between Moscow and one of their transport ships which brought it, literally, within 100 yards of starting WWIII. diplomacy won out. Russia does not want an all out nuclear war any more than we do. I believe that when Iran eventually gets the bomb, and they will, as will every other developing country eventually, that Iran will not want to sacrifice their entire nation for an attack on Israel or anyone else. If they were to launch on Israel not only would Israel launch their substantial nuclear arsenal on Iraq but we would be forced to follow suit. In the terms of the current treaty being negotiated Britain and France would also be compelled to defend Israel. Our current nuclear defense system which has been, in part shared with Israel, is superior to anything in the world.
Another issue is the fact that the inspectors in Iraq were dead on point about Iraq. There were no WMD’s in that country yet we invaded on the basis of trumped up information very similar to what the Republicans are touting now. The invasion of Iraq and doing away with Saddam is what has given ISIS the opening they needed to be where they are. We do not want to admit it but we need Iran to stay strong in the Middle East. The enemy of my enemy is my friend … at least for the time being.
By the way I did not even mention that we gave Bin Laden his start. We keep trying to be King Makers in an area where we don’t understand the cultures and it keeps backfiring on us.

I have fought for a lifetime against the argument that because “language has to change” all change is permissible and words mean whatever I want them to for the purpose of serving whatever argument I’m making. Equivocation is too useful to permit anything like a dictionary to have any authority.

It seems as though history has to change as well and in the same way. some fragment can always be used to prove any falsehood or fabrication and there’s no need to pay attention to that ocean of facts.

It’s funny though, an Iranian newspaper was just silenced for complaining that Iran gave away too much and you can’t trust the Americans. Maybe they’re right about that.

When it came time to force a US friendly government on Iraq, I seem to remember that it was the US who was wrong about WMD in Iraq. We’re still pretending inspections can’t work, when they did work and we ignored them and hundreds of thousands died and the Middle East began to commit suicide.
Can you blame the GOP warhawks and neo-cons for pretending history never happened?

It is interesting is it not Glenn. George W. Bush screwed up going into Iraq and now we have ISIS. The last remaining stable country with any power in the Middle East is Iran. Do we screw this up now and watch that part of the world crumble into pure chaos that with all of our military might cannot handle. Our last real “friend” in the region is Jordan but militarily they are not a powerhouse. If the Republicans get their way we can prepare for a long protracted war in the Middle East.

Yes it does which is why most Americans would rather not know it.
