Bill Nye Brings Down Hammer of Science on Abortion Opponents
Bill Nye, the beloved Science Guy of yesteryear who became a household name with his educational science videos, is on a contemporary crusade to inject some scientific sense into contemporary issues, including evolutionary teachings in schools, climate change and anti-abortion arguments. On Tuesday, Nye released a video on The Big Think’s channel titled “Can We Stop…

Since the entire concept of religion is not based on facts one cannot use facts to argue against it. It is virtual proof that, for the most part, Rational Man does not exist.
Somehow trying to inject reason and fact into this issue is fatuous. Belief is the opposite of many things and amongst those are logic and reason.
Of course Nye should stick to science. The Bible was certainly not written down 5000 years ago. It has antecedents that go back long before writing but anyone familiar with really ancient writings knows it’s a pastiche, a crazy quilt of legends and traditions that doesn’t fit together very well. It has overlaps and gaps and contradictions. Most of it was put together during the Babylonian Exile of the Jews in the 6th century BCE and borrows from all kinds of traditions, all kinds of gods and all kinds of stories and that’s why unbeknownst to Sunday School teachers there are multiple versions in the same book and multiple Gods blended into one. Yahweh used to hate El the Bull, the golden calf or the Caananites until they became one. There are passages taken from Egyptian novels, Moses is confused with Sargon, there are parts taken from the Babylonian Enuma Elish, from Bel and the Dragon etc, etc.
Noah used to be Atrahasis and before that he was Utnapishtim and before that Ziusudra and before that who knows? The editing and redacting and addition continued into the 4th century. It’s not history, it’s not science, it’s not the truth and on that Nye and I are in qgreement.
Listening to Carly Fiorino on Meet The Press this morning it’s obvious that no amount of obvious and verifiable truth is going to get in the way of the Republican program. She may well be the Candidate next year and she will look you in the eye and keep repeating that she saw a film and that “it happened.” Over and over in response to every question and challenge: “it happened, it happened. I know it happened” It didn’t. It’s obvious that even if they were selling tissue, they didn’t need to “keep it alive so we can harvest it’s brain”
It’s the same way they act about that damned Bible. It’s truth by assertion, argument by fraud and no amount of reason or fact or appeal to evidence will make a damn bit of difference. Sorry Bill, you’re whistling in the wind. We can’t persuade them, we have to defeat them and go on defeating them.
