Will Britain Leave The European Union In 2016?

Read Time:4 Minute, 47 Second

Clearly I hope we will. Equally clearly President Obama hopes we won’t (because, for some bizarre reason, he decided to say so) as does Prime Minister David Cameron. There’s little point in me writing anything about this from my personal perspective as it would be basically “Let’s leave” and that would be it. Two words do not an article make methinks. Therefore, I present an unbiased perspective on Britain continuing to be a member of The European Union, or not.

EU_flag_SPIF

I suppose the best way for me, of all people, to say anything ‘unbiased’ about the EU would be for me to get ‘all my shit’ out of the way in order to clear my mind – or what passes for my mind – and then attempt to be objective about the EU.

The European Union is an affront to democracy and, if it’s allowed to continue will, ultimately, destroy democracy. The only way a democratic country can remain democratic is if it continues independently to carry out it’s business in a democratic way – in other words, carry out the ‘will of the people’. This is impossible in the European Union quite simply because the EU is not a country, it is a union of nation states who’s very ‘nationhood’ is under threat by membership of the EU.

Right. That’s got that out of the way.

There have been a number of polls across Britain over the last decade or so regarding whether the British people wish to remain a member of the European Union.

Up until the refugee crisis in the Mediterranean the polls – usually held via some news paper or other – have come out in favour of continuing our membership of the EU.

This has often puzzled me as I’ve often struggled to actually find anyone over the age of about 40 who wants us to continue as a member state. I have, therefore, assumed that most of those questioned have been from a younger generation and, as a result, are worried about Britain leaving as, since their birth, we’ve been a member.

My daughter is a prime example. She believes that leaving the EU would be a disaster.

Fair enough. I disagree but accept and respect a view other than my own.

The latest poll, conducted by The Daily Mail – which is not exactly a lover of the EU – suggests that the winds are changing and a majority are now in favour of leaving.

I suspect that, whilst The Daily Mail is not exactly a news paper you can generally trust, the outcome of their poll may well carry more than a grain of truth.

Increasingly the British people have seen their country change beyond all recognition in places without their approval. That isn’t to say they wouldn’t have approved but, in a democracy, it’s rather nice to be asked first don’t you think?

The British are, perhaps more than any other nation on the globe, an incredibly tolerant people who will try their very hardest to accommodate pretty much anyone and everyone who sets foot on our shores. We are, as a rule, quite flattered when some immigrant wants to come and live here. It’s nice when we are paid the compliment of being told via someone wanting to settle here, that we are a very nice place to come and live.

In some ways that very accommodating nature has, perhaps, begun to work against us somewhat.

The European Union is accommodating in that it insists that, as a member state, you have ‘open borders’ and allow ‘free movement’ of EU citizens.

This, in and of itself, was not deemed an issue by the Brits – well, it wasn’t until it became increasingly apparent that everyone seemed to want to come here. Had a few thousand wanted to come here all well and good but, over the last couple of decades millions have come here and, accommodating or not, the Brits are starting to wonder just how many more we can actually fit in to our small island.

Our infrastructure is, in places, at breaking point and we hear on a daily basis how our elderly are not cared for adequately do to a shortage of hospital beds and we start to think ‘hang on a minute, there’s too many people here’ but we are loathe to speak such thoughts for fear of being called xenophobic.

We look to the EU and think ‘open borders are not a very good thing’ and then we realise that, if we remain in the EU open borders are sacrosanct.

That is, primarily, the reason why I believe that, as things stand, the British people will vote to leave the EU. Prime Minister Cameron insists he can reclaim our border controls from within the EU.

If he succeeds he will have achieved the impossible and, as a result, will almost certainly assure our continued membership.

If he fails – and he surely will – the British will vote to leave the EU and Britain will be far better as a result.

I think I let my own opinions sneak in a bit there didn’t I? Oh well, never mind. Look on the bright side. If Britain leaves the EU then all well and good.

If Britain remains in the EU with open borders then the day may come when people like me turn up on America’s shores as refugees from an overcrowded and impoverished nation at war with itself as Islamic fundementalists take over various towns and instigate Sharia law whilst Eastern European immigrants refuse to sell anything in our shops that isn’t Polish.

Do you really want people like me coming to live in America?

It could happen you know if we remain in the EU.

Be afraid – be very afraid 🙂

I’m not up on all the going on with this but doesn’t the UK have to pay like a lot of money to stay in the EU so other nations can be helped out when needs arise. Also Norman or the others that might explain this to me.

So in geography classes I learned that the UK is England,Wales,Northern part of Ireland and Scotland right. Why is it when an article comes out like say, home prices in the UK are out of reach for the youth of this country and here are the areas it is bad. can you explain to me why they only will show parts of England and Wales where house prices are high and they don’t show Northern Ireland or Scotland because you just know houses can be high there too. Or when they talk about weather in the Uk they only show England weather. Does England not like Wales or Scotland, if so why did they get all teary and weepy when Scotland had that let’s leave campaign going on? Thanks for helping an American understand 🙂

For Jess : It tends to be some Welsh and Scots don’t like the English rather than the other way around. Unless Wales or Scotland are actually playing against England in some sport or other, the English tend to cheer on the Welsh and Scots but the reverse is rarely the case.

It’s mainly a historical thing as the English have Britain’s Parliament in England and, despite devolution, the Welsh and Scots – understandably much of the time – tend to believe they are often forgotten or poorly treated.

Being a northerner I sympathise with them as the north of England often feels forgotten too but, sadly, we can’t have any devolution from the London parliament.

Northern Ireland is a whole other ball game. William Of Orange who, I believe, was Dutch (bloody Europe again) 😉 – decided, in order to be King of everywhere or something, moved a load of mainly Scottish protestants into the northern counties of Ireland which were, of course, Catholic.

This ultimately resulted in Britain running the show in those northern counties which, quite understandably, upset the Irish.

Unfortunately it wasn’t all sorted out back then so, by the time the IRA got into gear, there were loads of people in Northern Ireland who wanted to be British and loads who didn’t hence the impossibility of anything there ever being sorted again.

I’ve no idea how anyone achieved it but, at least for the last couple of decades, the IRA haven’t blown up any pubs so it seems to be working.

As for house prices. In the south (London) they are ludicrous. I could sell my house and buy a bloody street of them up north.

There you go. All explained x

Uncontrolled immigration is catastrophic and essentially inane. Ask a Native American.
