5 Ways to Save Money on Household Goods

Read Time:3 Minute, 29 Second

Anyone who rents or owns a home knows how pricey household goods can get. While these items are necessities to keep a clean and well-organized home, it can be a drag having to pay what seems like exorbitant costs for these items. However, if you’re just a little creative, you can get away with saving a lot of money on common household goods. Read on to find some of the ways you can keep most of your cash but still have quality products to use around your house.

Sign Up For Repeat Deliveries

Many companies offer subscription-style sales of products you use regularly at greatly reduced rates. Amazon has a Subscribe and Save service on household items, including coffee and dishwashing pods. Petco makes repeat deliveries on pet food, perfect for busy pet owners who want to make sure their animals have their favorite foods without spending a fortune. Most subscription services include free shipping, making it even cheaper. Plus, you don’t have to worry about ordering your product or having to go to the store — the regular schedule means you know when your product will arrive, making it easier to budget and plan.

DIY

You can make an incredible range of household products at home for a fraction of the cost. Create your own dish detergent, lotion bars, mouthwash, laundry detergent and more at home with relatively few ingredients and a huge price reduction. By making these products at home, not only can you customize the recipe, you can create huge batches, saving yourself from last-minute store trips and frustration. Making things at home also allows you to see what’s going into them, so you can stay more conscious of the chemicals you use every day. For those who have sensitive skin, making your own products can help you avoid reactions, especially if you have problems with artificial scents and perfumes.

Use Company Offers

Many stores make it easy for their regular shoppers to save money. See if your local stores have frequent buyers clubs, where you can get great discounts or coupons. Amway has an incentive for sellers — by signing up as a seller, you can get paid for every item you sell, and Amway has products for all lifestyles. By selling to yourself, you end up with great discounts on home goods. Companies may also offer rewards cards, which is a helpful way to get money back while shopping at your favorite store. Companies that do this will also often give their rewards members great deals and coupons that may not be available to those who are not part of the rewards program.

Buy In Bulk

The most commonly used money-saving tactic, buying in bulk is great for both small and large households. Although regular stores sometimes offer bulk-packaged items, warehouse stores really shine in this area. Bulk packaging usually runs cheaper per item than smaller packages, and you also have a longer time between shopping trips if you stock up. Bulk doesn’t just apply to paper products and cleaning supplies either. Many foods come in bulk packaging, great if you hate going to the grocery store or if you have a lot of mouths to feed. You can get everything from meat to breakfast bars in bulk, and at steep discounts compared to grocery store packaging. Other items are cheaper at the warehouse stores too, including computers, school supplies, and much more.

Go Generic

Often made by the same companies that sell higher-priced items, generic brands are nothing to avoid. They have the same quality in most cases; you just aren’t paying for the name brand. Whether it’s medication or popcorn, generic options can help you save money without worrying about sacrificing quality. Generic options can be found in most grocery stores, home goods stores, and convenience stores, and typically run several dollars cheaper than name brand products, a great deal if you’re on a strict budget.

Saving money on household goods is something most people strive to do, and by following the above tips, you’ll be well on your way to slimming down your budget, without having to struggle or sacrifice.
