A Clash Of Cultures?

Read Time:3 Minute, 56 Second

diversityI live in a small road that, by the time you drive down to my end of it, is a cul-de-sac or no through road. As a result it is very quiet and, generally, quite a nice place to live. Most residents have lived here for a long time and we all know each other. It is particularly nice as well that, despite knowing each other, we don’t ‘live in each other’s pockets’ and we all have our privacy whilst ‘looking out for each other’. Lovely.

We have a Muslim family, two Sikh families, one Christian Asian family, one Hindu family, two Irish families, a Polish family and several indigenous English families. It’s a bit like living in a ‘United Nations’ street and we all love being here.

Certainly the town is bloody awful – primarily due to the massive influx of mainly African Muslims of mostly Somalian origin. I have met some Somalis who are lovely people – indeed I have taught a few to drive – but, it has to be said and is often said by every race and creed in my street that the influx of Somali Muslims to our town is primarily a very bad thing.

They spit everywhere for one thing – seriously, they do. Every time you walk through the high street of our town you can guarantee that you will see a Somali man spitting – almost certainly a few actually.

Apparently, we have all been told by our local council, it is a ‘cultural thing’ and we must accept that others have different cultures and that must be respected.

My response of “stuff their culture. Either they adapt to ours and stop behaving in such a disgusting way or piss off back to Somalia” was greeted with dismay by the precious little thing from the council – She looked like my comment was going to cause her to burst into tears.

What was most impressive though was when our Asian neighbours and, in particular, our Muslim neighbours vocally and loudly agreed with me.

At this point the ‘precious little thing’ from the council made a hasty escape from our meeting. At least she knew when she was soundly beaten. Sadly I doubt she had the wit to realise how wrong she was.

In the meantime another Polish family are moving in. They are having a huge amount of work done to their new home and, as yet, are not living there.

Today I happened to have just reversed out of our driveway when they came hurtling down our small road. I could have reversed my car a bit but chose to stay put in order to make them slow down.

The lady – who I had previously spoken to quite pleasantly glared at me and waved me to move.

I got out of the car and asked “Have you overdosed on Formula 1 then love? A bit quick down this little road weren’t you?”

The chap – I think he’s her husband – opened his window and said “You move! We in hurry!”

I said “Bollocks! You ever drive like that down here again and me and you, sunshine, will be sharing an understanding!”

“We always drive fast in Poland!” exclaimed the woman – I suspect that A) they probably do but B) it doesn’t qualify as cultural – “Couldn’t care less” I said, “this is my road and if you want to be happy here I suggest you don’t unnecessarily piss off the neighbours and driving like that at that speed will definitely piss off the neighbours so don’t do it”

The thing is, culture isn’t necessarily a problem. African Caribbean ‘culture’ has given Britain so many benefits not least The Notting Hill Carnival and any number of fantastic athletes along with music and terrific food and yardies – well, perhaps we’ll gloss over the gangster bit eh? 😉

Personally I don’t really think ‘culture’ is a problem. The problem is ‘respect’.

If you go and live in another country you must show ‘respect’ for said country and, unfortunately, some immigrants fail abysmally to do so – The Brits in Spain are a case in point.

So, spitting Somali’s. Stop it. Speeding Poles, Stop it. Islamic extremists. Stop it.

This is England and you are welcome only if you respect being here. I would have no problem at all if the Spanish kicked out the awful British ex-pats in Spain who are often, frankly, an embarrassment with their terrible behaviour.

By the same token, we should kick out immigrants who fail to respect our country and behave in such a disrespectful way.

Any more speeding down our little road and I’ll puncture their bloody tyres. That’ll slow them down a bit 😉

I’m cultured me don’t yew know?

Any atheists living around you Neil? If so, are they discriminated against? They are in the US, depending on where you live.

I live in a small town too. Actually it isn’t even a town, but just an unincorporated area with a name. The real problem we have here isn’t with the small number of European expats, but sadly, with those who don’t have that excuse. Respect indeed, and in an American election year, it’s hard to have anyone you can respect, who gives a damn whether or not you treat him with it or is really worthy of it. We have people who ride your ass on the road and if you’re doing a hundred need to push you out of the way. You see stickers on cars calling “Liberals” traitors and are happy to tell you that atheists should be deported and who scream SPEAK ENGLISH if they hear anyone say anything in Spanish.

I wonder if it isn’t a world wide problem.

I like “you and I are going to be sharing an understanding.” You should send him to one of those British soccer gangs, where after the game, you beat the shit out of each other with tire-chains and leather saps. These Muslims and Poles need to know what scrappy bastards you English are. Nobody loves a good row, more than an Englishman.

Agreed! It’s neither a question of political correctness racism, it’s respect and getting along.
