The continued expansion of the human race can’t, I don’t think, fail to be at the expense of most other life forms, except for things like cockroaches. So many of the things we do and tell others to do in the interest of “saving the planet” are simply overwhelmed by the growing number of people and their growing ability to be consumers of our resources.

It’s sort of sad that a few extremists have become the paradigm and people really worried about being forced to be vegans and have nightmares about People for the Ethical Treatment of Vegetables raiding our pantries. If PETA is not an uncompromising and extremist organization they are doing a poor job of letting us know, but as to orcas and elephants and apes and others, I think we should sure as hell leave them alone as much as is possible. These displays of sea mammals ae simply another form of circus and it’s time for them to fade away in their current form.

Agreed! We have brought their knowledge and conditions to the attention of the standard person, but having done so, we now have to realize that that knowledge and attention is unnecessary and harmful! It’s time to back off and let the animals BE! It’s wonderful to think that we’re helping but enlightening to know that in fact, were harming!

Part of the problem, in a way, Marsha, is that once humans become aware of something they begin to interfere with it in the name of conservation. For example, the wolf, which is the basis for all of our dogs, is slowly becoming extinct. One a proud majestic animal has now become a pest to farmers and stock owners in the western part of the country. Because we cherish our meat meals more than their existence we allow them to be killed on sight in many places. We, a single species, have disrupted the natural order things and are now trying to control the population of other species. We are a blight on nature.

I agree with Jack Hanna that SeaWorld did raise the consciousness of the American people to orcas overall, and without it wouldn’t even care. BUT, we now DO care, and the more we learn about wildlife, the more we learn all awfully our “facilities” are and how important it is to allow said wildlife to be WILD! All of those methods of viewing orcas in the wild were always available, and it was SeaWorld that increase the desire to view orcas, but that desire has been instilled, and now we know that watching them in the wild is far preferable to capturing and keeping them! And we recognize that the way we do it is TORTURE!
Research about orcas is useless if we don’t heed it!
