Movies: ‘The Shallows’ A 4-Star Fright Fest

Read Time:1 Minute, 23 Second

This is a movie about a shark, a Great White Shark.  Now before you go ‘ho-hum, another shark picture,’ take a deep breath, because this isn’t your father’s shark movie.

Not since the original Jaws have we seen a real, honest to goodness, scary as hell flick starring a Great White, a beautiful blonde, and a buoy with a bell on it.

From the opening scenes where we meet the other star of the show, Blake Lively, you get a sense of impending doom, and doom there is for more than a couple of unlucky folks in this blood soaked ocean adventure.

Set on an out of the way, gaspingly beautiful Mexican beach, with breathtaking scenery, our beautiful blonde, a medical student who needs to get away following the untimely death of her mother, meets a couple of locals and they have a famous time surfing the waves and just enjoying the day. Unfortunately she decides, as her new friends are leaving, to ride one more wave before nightfall, and that’s when she meets the other star of the show.

The battle between the two is epic, and heart stopping, so don’t balance that popcorn on your lap, because it’s liable to go flying during those times when Lively and the shark get up close and personal.

Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra this movie does for surfing what The Blair Witch Project did for camping. It’s also the the fastest and most entertaining 1 hour and 29 minutes I’ve spent at the movies in a long time.

I give this magic bit of filmmaking four stars.  Don’t miss it.

There is nothing more majestic than watching that huge shark glide so effortlessly through the water.
