Will British Democracy Survive The EU Vote?

There is a Labour politician called David Lammy – I have no idea whether that is the correct way to spell his name and and I’m not going to Google it. That is how it is pronounced so it will do. The idiot doesn’t deserve being Google checked anyway as he is clearly an enemy of democracy. Worryingly he isn’t the only one either. British democracy is coming under attack from several quarters and, amazingly, the European Union, in one case, have actually supported our democracy so well done EU!

David Lammy, who is a sitting member of parliament, has had the audacity to suggest that our parliament should ignore the outcome of the EU referendum and, despite the will of the British people, remain in the EU.

Now, there will be any number of people who would applaud remaining in the EU but this is of no consequence. Whilst a referendum, unlike an election, is not legally nor politically binding, to ignore the wishes of the majority of British people would quite conceivably result at the very least in rioting in the streets.

It is an absolutely appalling and disgraceful suggestion by Lammy and he, and any politicians who support his stance should not only be ashamed of their arrogance but, in my view, be dismissed from their posts.

The fish lady, as I always call her, Nichola Sturgeon, Scotland’s First Minister has also been denigrating British democracy as have Northern Ireland’s Sinn Fein. Scotland voted to remain as did Northern Ireland and this, apparently, means they are entitled to ignore the will of the British people.

The fish lady has always been clearly aggrieved that Scotland voted to remain in the United Kingdom not long ago so, as the majority of Scotland voted to remain in the EU yet have now to leave as part of the UK she seems to think that they can now hold another referendum on remaining in the UK. She seemed to think that Scotland would now vote to leave the UK as she wishes Scotland to remain in the EU.

Thankfully the EU, whilst perhaps hurting from Britain’s referendum decision, had the decency to tell Sturgeon ‘No’. In other words, the EU would not accept Scotland alone as they accept Scotland voted to remain in the UK therefore democracy is served and Sturgeon and her Scottish independence cohorts should shut up and understand that democracy is not ‘we will continue holding referendums until we get the result we desire’ it is ‘you had your referendum, Scotland voted to remain in the UK therefore Scotland is a part of the UK and whether it likes it or not it will damn well accept the view of the British people’.

Nice one EU.

Of course, people in America may be unfamiliar with Sturgeon and Lammy. They may also be unfamiliar with Northern Ireland’s Sinn Fein. Their representative Martin McGuinness has also been prattling on about how democracy will only be served if Northern Ireland can have a referendum regarding unifying Ireland so Northern Ireland can remain in the EU.

Look people. Northern Ireland is in the UK. Scotland is in the UK. It matters not one jot whether more people voted to remain in the EU in Northern Ireland or Scotland. You are not independent countries. Whilst you have some autonomy and self governance you are not independent therefore the decision of the British people is binding on you as well so get over it.

I do apologise if your eyes glazed over a wee bit – mine did when I read things about Ted Cruz and others on MMA as I’d never heard of him but I persevered and hope you have too.

You see, there seems to be a worrying ground swell from those who are upset that Britain voted to leave the EU – for better or worse who yet knows? – and they seem to be of the opinion that it is only democracy if it works for them.

Actually the EU itself have been guilty of that on more than one occasion. Ireland once voted against something or other – I forget what now – joining the Euro? Anyway, whatever it was the EU told Ireland to hold another referendum until they voted the way the EU wanted.

I’m sorry fish lady and Sinn Fein. Whether you like it or not, you live in a democratic United Kingdom. Scotland had it’s chance to leave and voted to remain.

If the United Kingdom democratically vote for something you don’t like then tough. Take it on the chin and continue working to get the best for the people of Scotland and Northern Ireland.

If you think for one iota of a second that the UK will allow you to walk over the democratic will of it’s people just because your bit disagreed then you can think again.

It ain’t gonna happen.

Mind you, if it does and the British government are weak enough to allow it to happen then British democracy is doomed.

Whilst I do sympathise with the Scots and Northern Irish who often feel the government in Westminster is too far removed from them – as a northerner we of the north think that too – it is essential for the continued democratic process in the UK that they are told in no uncertain terms.

‘The British people have spoken and you will accept it. You don’t have to like it. In fact you can even hate it but you will live with it’.

There is no alternative if British democracy is to continue to mean a damn thing.

Hell, if we survived the tragedies we have had to survive, like Commander Cuckoo bananas and some of his GoOper brethren prior to him, you in the UK can do that stiff upper lip thing you are known for and get on with it till it all gets fixed.
