An Englishman Wants To Know: Is America Really A Democracy?

Read Time:3 Minute, 43 Second

Is America a democracy? Now that, to me, is a very strange question but one I feel a need to ask. Let me ask it again: Is America a democracy or not? Certainly America isn’t the ‘home of democracy’. That possibly illustrious title belongs to Britain, the country that gave birth to democracy – or so I am led to believe anyway. Regardless of the accuracy of that statement, America is seen as the leader of western democracy and yet is apparently on the verge of rejecting its own democracy.

Donald Trump aka The Donald aka Hamster Head aka Racist Misogynist Bigot aka any other number of things won the race for the Presidency.

What part of ‘Trump won’ is seemingly so hard to understand? I can certainly see that it’s a hard pill to swallow. I can certainly see that his very presence as President may somehow ultimately be rather undermining to democracy itself in a way but he won.

People can waffle on about the ‘popular vote’ and they can waffle on about whether the electoral colleges may change their minds until hell freezes over but the unpalatable truth is simple and inarguable.

Under the current democratic system in The USA, TRUMP WON.

I don’t like it, you don’t like it, many immigrants don’t like it, liberals et al don’t like it, Mexico doesn’t like it and, for all I know, various as yet unknown alien life forms don’t like it but it matters not one bloody jot.

TRUMP WON under your current democratic system.

Fine! Your democratic system is crap. It is garbage.

Fine! You won’t give him a chance (to do what anyway? Blow up the world?)

Fine! Most sane people consider it a disaster.

Fine! People are writing articles on MadMike’sAmerica and elsewhere regarding the mayhem that will, or may, ensue on his taking up residence in The White House.

Fine! The world as we know it or, indeed, the world as anyone or anything living knows it may end the day after he becomes President.

Fine! He might turn the entire US into one huge golf course and have Mexicans and Muslims used as flagpoles on the greens.

IT MATTERS NOT.

If America is a democracy then Trump won under America’s democratic system.

If, and it may be a big ‘if’, I have no idea, Trump is somehow prevented from becoming President after he WON under your current democratic system then, as you rejoice, remember you will be rejoicing the death of America as a democratic country.

If, God or the deity of your choice, Labour’s Jeremy Corbyn ever became Prime Minister of Britain I would be devastated, appalled and, probably, very angry.

Given my opinion of Corbyn I would have every right to feel those emotions but, if, somehow, after he had been democratically elected as Prime Minister, some method of denying that democratic vote was found I would actually fight to see him in Number 10 Downing Street.

Democracy must prevail even when democracy goes tits up. Democracy must prevail even when we actively hate the result of democracy.

That, my friends, IS democracy.

By all means castigate Trump and, come to that, any other politician you care to castigate – that’s called freedom of speech which is part of democracy too.

By all means castigate me for criticizing you for even contemplating your democratic result being overturned but, stop and think.

There are more reasons than I can even be bothered to list to be absolutely terrified of a Trump Presidency but if it doesn’t actually happen then you are no longer a democracy. You might as well be a banana republic.

In fact, if Trump is somehow prevented from becoming President directly against your own democratic system then you are a banana republic.

In fact, if Trump is somehow prevented from becoming President MMA will have to rename itself Mad Mike’s Banana Republic.

Personally I would find that far more sad than I would find President Trump terrifying. One day he would no longer be President. America would, if he is denied what is a legitimate victory under your own democratic process, be forever more a banana republic.

That is truly horrifying.

There are some disturbing issues that have come to light since the election that may point to chicanery and outside forces to sway (throw) this election thus thumbing their noses as the democratic process. Three contested states do not want to recount even though there is evidence of machine tampering and voter supression, hmmm. Russia has claimed to have played a role in broadcasting false facts over the internet perhaps turning fence sitters to the right. The popular vote is in the multimillions in favor of Clinton which is a big red flag and the leader of the FBI may well be guilty of deceit and illegal acts. So, no, we should NOT accept this result quietly and with dignity – we are the Colonies, remember? The rabble rousing lot that would not quietly accept the rule of King George, nor would we continue to oppress blacks and women. There are an unprecedented number of stupid, lazy people in this country so we probably deserve whatever we get but those of us with more than 2 brain cells and a belief in freedom for all will go down fighting.

He actually seems to like Kim Jong Un, at least that’s what he said on the campaign trail.

Not my president. Wait, actually he is. No, what you’re saying is a figure of speech, right? He is our president and man does that ever piss me the hell off. There. I think I might have gotten it right.

Um, no, Britain is not the home of democracy I do believe that title goes to Greece. We here are a representative republic that gives democracy lip service because of our electoral college, which was basically put into place to do away with mob rule and to keep slave owning states happy. That was then, this is now and we are now going into civil war part deux with these fuckin idiots voting him in. Took 150 years but apparently the south has risen again if you listen to the morons from the fright wing.

Well now, it occurs to me had the colonists been willing to accept the status quo, or seen King George as the leader of the new world we’d all be drinking tea, speaking with an English accent, and referring to men as bloke 🙂 No, democracy allows for free speech and peaceful dissent wherever possible. As to Trump, well, he poses a threat to the nation, and to the free world, including the UK, so I’m NEVER going to accept him as our president and neither will millions and millions of Americans.
