Donald Trump: Citizen Kane Redux?

Read Time:48 Second

I recorded Citizen Kane from TCM the other night and started to watch it. It’s been decades since I last saw it, but it’s a whole new movie now.

You see, one can’t watch it without seeing it as Citizen Trump: bigger than life manipulating public opinion, bragging about being patriotic with links to Hitler, making predictions that there will be no WWII because Hitler wouldn’t do that.

Where it differs is that Kane is ready to run for president when a sex scandal ruins him and he fades into obscurity and “no one listens to him any more.”

Today we don’t give a damn about sex scandals or anything else because that ability to manipulate public opinion has triumphed over everything. Anything that happens can and will be successfully denied.

Will a scandal – any scandal – be enough to unseat Citizen Trump? Will he pass away a broken, sad old man all alone, mumbling about some long lost childhood toy?

If only a major network had aired it on Election Eve, we may not be in the bubbling cauldron we’re in now.

Of course the movie is about William Randolph Hurst who also mastered the technique of using and manipulating the news to his advantage even to the point of starting a war by using fake news. It’s also about an America who went to war enthusiastically. We still don’t like to remember the Maine, do we? Paling around with tyrants, making people afraid, making people angry all to gain power. That’s Trump. I’m hoping that a similar end comes to Donald and wouldn’t it be nice to remember him by sending a hundred million cards with a picture of a sled and the word “Rosebud” on each?

That would be a card to remember indeed. Let’s just hope there are still a hundred million of us left to sign it.

I just watched it again this afternoon, after reading your article, and the resemblance is fucking striking.
