History Doesn’t Grade On A Curve

We have a diplomatic service of trained professionals who handle such things continuously and often so well we don’t notice the incidents. A free floating temperature measuring device is picked up in disputed waters by the Chinese navy.
Now, of course, they know what it is and what it is not and we’re in talks over settling the matter smoothly. By all appearances that’s just what will happen as China has promised to return it in an appropriate manner.
Then there’s Trump, sitting up nights playing with his phone, tweeting like an ugly, narcissistic yellow bird, trying to make this a Celebrity death match or the latest sequel to Thunderdome.

Does Trump have the sense to just let it go, letting both sides save face and appear in control? Are you kidding me? We’re talking about Trump, Donald Trump, the rusted out Rambo who thinks the world is a disease and he’s the cure.
Fortunately we still have Obama’s diplomats running this exchange and not some travelling Trump circus. The most Trump can do is to embarrass us and worry them. Nonetheless, this is a bit of a first test and I fear the moving finger will soon write F at the top in red pencil. The real test will begin in a month and history does not grade on the curve.

I doubt history will be forgiving, but yes, I see the country swirling down the toilet while they portray it as a day at the beach.
Unfortunately too many major media outlets continue to act as if Trump is just a normal guy who will at least try to fulfill the expectations he set for himself. During the election Trump promised to “pivot,” and reporters seize on the evidence that he’s actually done that. Trump promises to give a major speech, and so cable news channels air 25 minutes of veterans singing his praises in the assumption that the speech is going to begin any minute. This is one of the many reasons Trump won the election and why, at least at first, the press is going to be forgiving, and damn the consequences.
