Republicans Just Don’t Care About America

Read Time:4 Minute, 47 Second

by Bill Formby

Today Americans are likely to be ashamed of their government. I am ashamed that my country is behaving like a banana republic.  While there is plenty of blame to go around there is a big, red, flashing arrow pointed at the Republicans. With only a couple of exceptions they have made it clear that they have placed party loyalty over everything else.

It is said that people should be judged by their actions and I agree with that so all one has to do is to just roll back the curtain a moment for a quick view of what is going on in Washington these days. While it was clear to most everyone that Donald Trump was not going to make a good president there seemed to be little anyone could do to stop him.

The Republican machine had denigrated Hillary Clinton for so many years that there were simply too many people that hated her without a valid reason. It is one thing to have opposing political views and to clash on those ideas but the Republicans had demonized her since the days of Bill Clinton. Everyone knew however, that was going to happen and, in my opinion, she was a little too over confident and let things slip away.

So now we have The Donald and it’s worse than most imagined. Trump not only doesn’t know what he’s doing but is making the government a playground for the rich and powerful. There is no longer a question of whether the Russians interfered with the election process, it is now only a question of whether the Trump campaign, and perhaps Trump himself, was in collusion with the Russians.

This is a time when every American should be concerned but Republicans really aren’t worried about the country or our government. They are worried about the Republican Party and themselves first and foremost and it’s becoming more and more clear every day that America is in really deep shit.

Trump, of course, is in denial. After all, he won the election handily, and there was never any interference from Russia, plus he had the biggest inaugural turnout in history. He has tried to cast doubt on everything and everyone to deflect people from looking to hard at him, from blaming the media to accusing President  Obama of having Trump Towers wiretapped.

When he found out that his national security advisor had been talking to the Russians about the campaign he didn’t let it be known nor did he fire him. Only when the public found out did Flynn resign from office. Interestingly enough, it wasn’t the Republicans who immediately started calling for his resignation.

In terms of the vacant supreme court seat Mitch McConnell and the Republicans essentially stole it by refusing to hold confirmation hearings for Merrick Garland. Now they are trying to rush through the Republican choice.

Even as we move further down that road the Republicans are not stepping up to protect the country. Instead they are fighting over a healthcare bill that even some of them have said will be devastating to tens of millions of Americans. Paul Ryan, the house speaker, is acting like a kid on Christmas morning, gleefully wanting to pass this destructive bill. After medicaid, he made it clear that medicare and social security are next. Not once has he focused on the fact that the country’s national security is at risk. It has gotten so bad that Trump has coopted the bipartisan committee that was established to investigate  Russian involvement in our government.

In an unprecedented move yesterday the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, Devin Nunes, received information regarding the investigation of the Trump campaign and the Russians. Before sharing it with any other member of the committee however, he took it to the White House. Let me restate that for emphasis: the chairman of the committee investigating Donald Trump and his campaign’s involvement with the Russians took newly obtained evidence to the targets of that investigation before sharing it with any other member of the committee.

The Republicans think of themselves and the party before they think about their country. Their party is more important than the 350 million people that make up what we know as America. This is the equivalent of the police getting evidence and showing it too the defense attorney before they give it to the prosecutor.

How can anyone trust the Republicans ever again? Hillary Clinton was crucified over using a personal computer server while secretary of state. More than half of the administration staff including the current secretary of state are using Gmail and AOL servers and no one is saying a word.

Donald Trump is the President and is making money from government contracts and his White House Counsel is hawking his daughter’s clothing line. His son-in-law is on the payroll and his sons travel the world for his businesses at the expense of the American taxpayer. It is costing an extra $40 billion dollars for his wife and son to stay in New York and the man goes to Florida just about every weekend at an extra cost of about $14 million per trip. Everything he promised the people that voted for him has already proven not to be true.

We will pay for his stupid wall, if it ever gets built. While everyone will be eligible for their healthcare package no one will be able to afford it.

It will not be the best coverage at the cheapest prices. He has failed twice to stop Muslims from coming into the country.

He is not making America great, he is selling it down the tubes to the Russians one piece at a time.

A big issue here is how much damage did this do to Trumps power as president. That remains to be seen. The fact that he threatened some congresspeople and it did not work.

Just heard TrumpCare bill delayed again, and Trump tells Washington post that’s the end. Bill won’t come up again for a long, long time, if ever. Victory, at least for now.

TRUE! Trump claims, at least for today, he did what he could, thus fulfilling campaign promise on Obamacare repeal, but other forces at work and repeal will not come up again for at least a year, probably never. Wonder what Ryan will say.

One thing at a time, I guess…

No, I think they are going to take on things that all Republicans can support. Tax cuts and cut backs on social programs and probably attacking abortions again.

I am afraid not Timmy. The tax cut bill is next and it will be another give away to the rich.

I had always considered myself quite fortunate not to be born in one of the dictatorships or overly poor countries whose government didn’t care about the citizens. Sadly, that fortune now appears to be changing! I would like to continue to trust our Constitution and ability to protect our citizenship, but it’s getting harder and harder!
Yes, the Republicans appear not to care about the country at all. It’s becoming much more visible how it is that dictatorships, fascist states, and banana republics happen, and it’s scary! The intent (or one of the intents) of the Constitution was to prevent one person party from taking over the nation and running everything. No king, remember? But the founding fathers had not counted on the greed and intensity of those wanted to gain power! Although they held that government jobs should not be full-time forever jobs, changed them. Governing is no longer a part of the lives of those doing it, it’s the entire life, and the Republicans in particular are doing their best to make it profitable – which is not to say that the Democrats don’t profit from it, also.
I am so saddened and disgusted by the change in fortune :-(.

Marsha, They are not through yet. The upcoming tax cut bill will be another test where the Republicans will be giving more money the wealthiest at the expense of the poor.

I am research other places to live just in case this crap continues. I just do not know if I can stand four years of this much less another term.

That’s the bottom line. His most important staffers have taken huge sums of money to promote the Russian cause at the expense of Europe, NATO and the USA and have helped facilitate illegal invasions and rig elections and influence sentiment abroad and at home. It’s not conjecture. We have pay stubs, documents, contracts and more. These things entail huge penalties. We are doing nothing except to interfere with bringing them to justice while howling about immigration and making up fake facts and events.

Ashamed to be American? You bet your ass! We have a criminal enterprise posing as a government and one that will inevitably reduce our security, out power and influence in the world as well as our wealth, health and well being. We can’t lock them all up soon enough and I fear we never will

I am a citizen of both the USA and the UK, and it has occurred to me, given the embarrassing occupant of the Oval Office, that I should take the red-covered passport out of the drawer, and put away the blue one, at least until the beast is tamed and our world becomes a better place.
