The dangers of pornography have been a vastly debated subject as some call for bans on it completely. I always find it amusing when people bring up this subject. WHen teaching at Alabama one my colleagues and I ran a simulation in which we randomly divided the class into two groups. Each group was told they were a citizens advisory group and there were going to be one of two kinds of adult rated movie houses allowed to be built in their town and they got to pick which one was to be allowed. One film was what we refer to now as hardcore pornography of the sexual variety. The other would consistently show highly graphic violent movies which would include rape, torture, blood, gore, and cannibalism. We co-taught this course for at least six years and during that time the “communities” consistently said they would prefer the violent movies over the sexual movies. Our comments were always the same. “And we wonder why we are one of the most violent countries on earth?”
I get this Bill. So seeing a titty is bad but seeing blown up pieces of people is a ok in certain people’s books. I’ll never understand that puritanism at all. Fly your freak flags people and worry not about what others say about you.
I agree with you entirely, Jess! I personally I’ve always had more trouble violence than sex depicted in movies or on TV! And if we are so against sex, what’s with our advertisements!?
You can’t parent a child without having had sex – either you or the biological parents! On the other hand, you may be able to live your entire life without major violence!!
I’m not seeing where it would be a problem at all, other than if you think you are nasty then you are probably just nasty with or without porn.
It’s a subject that no one seems quite rational on, particularly in a country with so many angry religious people. Whether “porn is murder” or it just doesn’t matter, you’re not going to build consensus. It does seem however than in countries where hard core porn is sold along with the daily paper and comic books, rape is a rarity, which is not true in places that ban it outright. Same goes, it would seem with legal prostitution.
One thing’s for sure: like the poor, porn will always be with us.
