I’m Only Human After All

Read Time:3 Minute, 13 Second

by Neil Bamforth

That’s me. Human. That’s you too – well it is unless you are a dog or a cat or something, in which case if your owners find out you can read this then you are worth a few dollars. Especially if you can read it out loud! Animals eh? Smarter than us are animals. We screw up the environment and cause mayhem all over the planet whilst cows just stand around peacefully chewing the cud and dogs just wander about licking our faces immediately after licking their balls. Smart are dogs. So are cats you know. They wash their asses then lick our faces too. Boy are we dumb!

That, ultimately, is about the best description you can make of humanity. Dumb. Of course there are other descriptions. Evil, magnificent, caring, selfish, self absorbed, funny, insane, warped, comical, dangerous. I could go on – and on and, let’s face it, I usually do. So I will.

Is it just me? I’m getting tired of humanity. Not all of humanity of course, just the ones who seemingly have the power to ‘make a difference’. The humans ‘in power’ whether here in Blighty or America or North Korea or Saudi Arabia or Russia or anywhere frankly. I’m just fed up with that bit of humanity.

I’m not perfect. I can be kind and loving and caring. I can also be stubborn, downright bloody minded and controversial in some eyes. Even worse perhaps, I couldn’t care less.

I love animals more than humans – well, except for that gorgeous blond at the top of my road (don’t tell the wifey) – but I give money to a former soldier living rough in my home town – and not just because he has a dog that has attached itself to him and has become his loyal friend.

I’m actually, sometimes, a bit upset that I have upset someone although sometimes I’m happy I did but then sometimes I’m guilty I did.

I hold opinions, many of them stupid, many understandable. Many change from day to day. I can write an article today that would be entirely different if I wrote it tomorrow.

I struggle to understand people who hold an opinion so strongly that they can’t consider any other point of view. Sometimes they are afraid of another point of view. I just don’t get that but that’s just me.

Actually, much of the time it’s you too.

Actually much of the time it’s Trump and Putin and Assad and Le Pen and Obama and the chap in North Korea with the silly haircut. They’re human too. Maybe bad, maybe good or maybe somewhere in between. Maybe sane or maybe completely mad as hatters but human nonetheless.

Our biggest crime is to be human as our biggest chance to survive and do the right thing is because we are human.

Would we be better than Trump? Would we be better than Obama? Would we be better than any leader if we were the leader?

Quite possibly. I suspect we wouldn’t gas children. I suspect we wouldn’t get a silly haircut and threaten nuclear war. I suspect we wouldn’t do any of the awful things leaders seem to do eventually – well, some of them do anyway. We wouldn’t would we? We can’t believe we ever would and, on the whole, we are hopefully right.

We know we are right and would never do anything awful because, well, we just know it don’t we?

I wonder.

We’re human just like them. You’re human just like me. We are capable of being magnificent and humble and loving and caring. We are capable of being bloody awful and cruel and uncaring as well.

That’s us.

In the unlikely eventuality that I ever become a world leader –

Don’t put your blame on me.

I’m only human after all.
