Multiculturalism: The Conundrum That Is Britain Today

Read Time:4 Minute, 46 Second

There are those who readily state that Britain today is a ‘multi-cultural society’. There are also those who object mightily to that very concept. The former state that, through immigration, we have become a ‘multicultural society’. The latter believe passionately that it is for other cultures to adapt to being in Britain. The problem that they are both right is just one of the conundrums facing Britain today.

You see, the latter are quite right. It is ‘their country’ and they should not have to allow for other cultures. Other cultures moving here should adapt to the fact they are moving here and, therefore, adapt their cultures to ensure their cultures do not ‘intrude’ on British culture.

The former are also quite right. The prime example here has to be the ‘Brits’ now living in Spain. The majority have settled in what is known as ‘The British Colony’. A part of Spain is now like a version of Essex on a sunny day. Having been there briefly I can confirm that many ‘Brits’ in said ‘British Colony’ behave very badly towards their Spanish hosts.

The latter are also quite right. Many immigrants formed their own communities. That is understandable. Safety in numbers and all that. Unfortunately, the ‘indigenous’ living in these newly formed immigrant communities immediately felt pushed out and alienated in their community in their country.

In order to be a multicultural country and / or society we must firstly be prepared to accept other cultures into out country.

Younger people in Britain seem far more able to do this primarily, I suspect, as they have grown up in this ‘multicultural’ society. This is a very good thing.

Older people – such as myself – are far more uncomfortable with this ‘multiculturalism’ malarkey. We feel those from other countries should be adapting to our way of life. We feel it is not a two way street it is one way. Our country, our ways. Like it or leave.

To be fair, that is not, I personally believe, an entirely unreasonable position. My daughter, being not entirely surprisingly younger than me, thinks otherwise. She believes we should embrace other cultures.

Based on what I have just said, as we older people shuffle off, the problem of multiculturalism should shuffle off with us – and I would be quite happy with that scenario. Whether it proved to be a good or bad thing would be immaterial to me as I would be deceased and no longer concerned.

However.

On a recent trip to my hometown I wandered through a market I loved in my younger days.

Sitting on an empty market stall were four young Asian lads. Walking past said stall were three young white girls.

I would estimate that the ages of all were around fourteen or fifteen.

“White slags!” shouted the Asian youths without any provocation whatsoever.

“Fuck off back to Pakistan!!” responded the young white girls (clearly oblivious to the obvious fact that, as Asian immigration began in the 1960’s, it was almost certain these young Asian lads were born here and, quite conceivably, their parents may well have been as well).

Oh dear.

Perhaps it isn’t entirely an ‘age thing’ after all. That is just one conundrum in Britain today. If it isn’t merely a simple case of us ‘oldies’ struggling to adapt to a changing demographic then what is it?

I fear it is humanity – with considerable help from the ‘media’ – although I’m not entirely convinced that humanity actually needs that much media help. To be honest we tend to hate and fight regardless of the media. I suppose the media sometimes can influence who we are going to hate and fight but, even without the media I suspect we would arrange something to assuage our violent tendencies.

As a member of British charity ‘Cats Protection’ I recently had to deal with a ‘cat problem’. The end result was fine for the cat but it was clear that the charity had been lied to by an Eastern European. “Dodgy foreigners” said a CP member to me – and, in truth, they were right.

The problem is that the term ‘dodgy foreigner’ will forever, in her vocabulary, be aimed at anyone who is not British.

Ultimately, that is the conundrum facing Britain today.

On the face of it we are now a multicultural society. In reality many cannot accept this. Often it is the very immigrants themselves who make the acceptance so difficult. The belief that it is older people who struggle with the concept and, as they die off, everything will be fine, is a false hope.

Increasingly young people are now objecting to the concept. I agree with them but I am, relatively, old. My views will be long gone within 20 years if I am lucky. The views of the young will still be here in 40 years and more.

I am increasingly alarmed that more and more young people seem to be ever more drawn to the belief that there should be no multi-culturalism in Britain. I agree wholeheartedly that there shouldn’t.

My alarm is that, after I am gone, nothing will really change and, indeed, it will get worse.

Multiculturalism is a failed way. It has proven a disastrous direction forced upon us by British liberalism.

They will never accept that. I know it to be true. Neither of those points mean much now. What does mean a lot is that more and more of our youth are now seeing the folly of multiculturalism. It means a lot because we are now saddled with it and it ain’t going away.

The conundrum for Britain is ‘whither now’?

Not to, I suspect, a peaceful and happy place.

As usual Norm/Neil tries to swing both ways but I think the truth is in the last few paragraphs (lines) his true beliefs. I think the opposite the youth of today hopefully are more tolerant of other people other than the brainwashed sons and daughters of the likes of the BNP and EDL and other right wing groups that spend their whole time trying to stir up problems. Thankfully they’re only a small minority of Brits.

It’s the way it is. I don’t always like it, but then again, America was founded on multiculturalism. First it was you Brits, then the French, the Italians, the Irish, and etc. What if it were still and just you Brits? How fucked up would that be? 🙂
