Original Sin

Read Time:1 Minute, 55 Second

Godwin’s law may have become an immortal meme and it’s certainly being used to stifle any legitimate conversation about the techniques of and methods of becoming a dangerous demagogue with the support of millions. I’d like to propose another one that’s become apparent in recent years, call it what you will.

Any conversation sufficiently long will eventually result in accusations of racism. It’s driving me off the internet and particularly un-moderated venues frequented by younger people for whom anything, even a benign comment is a something-ism. Accusations of racism seem inevitable no matter how irrelevant if social trends, fashion, shifts in the political spectrum is discussed. Yesterday I was literally driven off a Facebook page about fact checking for proposing that the advent of constant internet connection had become a need rather than a luxury and more so the younger the user. Blatant racism of course and probably because I was a white male with white privilege. Raaaaaacist! spoke the chorus. I hate to give in and just abandon all discussion. That’s just what they want.

God help me if I had responded with a question about Han privilege or Tutsi privilege or Christian privilege or mentioned that tall people and good looking people had a stronger chance of economic success. Smart “privilege” Educated privilege?   Hell no. If it’s about white it’s all right, otherwise you’re a damned Raaaaacist.

Could I point out the obvious witch hunt so popular with Millennials who seem almost obsessed with finding and condemning racism in everyone including themselves and creating safe spaces where conversation or social intercourse can only be conducted in some sort of purified Esperanto?  Hell no once again.  suggesting a generation gap is “ageist” unless of course you’re condemning all white males.  Is this a kind of neo-puritanism hell bent on eradicating universal and unavoidable sin and little more? Is this different than a Trumpist inventing or exaggerating a problem in order to gain political advantage? I don’t dare ask, because it’s Raaaaaaaaacist!

No, like original sin, no one is free of it and let the flagellation begin, let the inquisition begin, let the crusade begin and don’t tell anyone to think about it. Don’t question doctrine and received wisdom – they went to college, after all.

Thanks for all the good comments. I have to think hypervigilance us being promoted as a virtue and the “seek and you shall find” principle obtains. If you dedicate yourself to rooting out all things that can be formed into a simulacrum of racism, you’re going to find it everywhere and when you have so much support from your peers you won’t question the practice. Another case of them against us as revolting to me as the Republican tribalism.

Can’t help wonder what is better correct or incorrect and who decides? Not Jesus I hope.

I had a similar experience on Facebook a couple of years ago. Was bad enough I closed my account. Don’t need that shit.

It’s this “politically correct” BS. It’s gone too far. People are afraid to speak.

There has been and always will be no such thing as objectivity in making assessments about anything. The sad thing is that in many cases the presentation of actual facts about any given subject will bring out the “alternative” facts or conspiracy theories that are made up on the fly with absolutely no grounding in reality.

Why bother with them? Life is just too fecking short to miss with fools.

I cannot abide know-it-alls and FB in particular is rife with pseudo experts. In many cases as you found it, they are downright mean.

A similar thing happened to me about a month ago. I made the observation, based on Table 43, FBI.gov, that African Americans are responsible for the majority of violent crime. I wasn’t judging, just stating the data collected by the FBI. I was roundly attacked and called every name imaginable.
