Scientists Are Bringing Back Extinct Species
This article originally appeared on The Conversation. De-extinction–the science of reviving species that have been lost–has moved from the realm of science-fiction to something that is now nearly feasible. Some types of lost mammals, birds or frogs may soon be able to be revived through de-extinction technologies. But just because we can, does it mean we…

But face it, we all want to see mammoths, even if only as zoo animals. I see the extinction of many species as a crime against nature and can’t understand why undoing that is bad. I’m not talking Jurassic Park – nobody is, but maybe a Pleistocene park? Cocos are cute too.
We almost made the bison extinct and if rescuing that species was good, would it have been bad if they were gone and we brought them back?
“There are things man was not meant to know (or do) ” is the theme behind most of the cheap sci-fi movies of the last century. Perhaps it started with Mary Shelley and Frankenstein, but space travel, nuclear power and countless other things have been portrayed as dangerous, deadly and the product of human arrogance. What was that story about Icarus trying to tell us?
If we hadn’t “messed with” Mother Nature we’d never have become a species, much less a successful one. Our very morphology reflects a million or so years of technology, small jaw, small teeth, much smaller digestive system and of course large brain. Mostly because we invented, knives and fire and weapons. OK maybe not large enough brains, but it beats the chimps. Remember when it gets to be 20 below how it messes with nature when you turn the heat on.
We are not even capable of living without technology. Most of our occupied territory would be uninhabitable without modifying nature.
Evangelista Torricelli was punished by the Church because his barometer “messed with nature” most scientists were and even Ben Franklin faced the wrath of the retros for flaunting god/nature with his lightning rod. At least we didn’t hang the Wright Brothers because you know, man was not meant to fly. Don’t even start on the hubris of vaccines and antibiotics much less GMOs.
Besides it wasn’t necessarily nature that made many species extinct. We did it. It amazes me that the technophobic spirit persists as it does. Yes our success has overpopulated the planet, but that wasn’t a technological choice – it was Mother Nature.
We should have learned by now it’s not a good idea to mess with Mother Nature.
You got that right Rachael. We never do learn and probably never will. Our arrogance won’t let us.
