I have agree and disagree with both of you. While I tire of the constant dwelling on the wrongness or rightness of BLM or any other group that feels victimized by the system and their continuous throwing it up in the face of everyone, I believe that it is coming from a place of fear. A good example is the island of Puerto Rico. As a possession of the U.S. they are citizens of this country who cannot vote in the presidential election and have only a non voting member of congress. As a territory of this country they cannot trade directly with another country directly. All foreign goods must first come to this country and then be shipped down to P.C. On the other hand, they cannot institute trade directly with any state directly because they are considered a foreign entity for trade with the states. They are in a limbo status of being neither a state nor a foreign country. Thus, practically everything in P.R. is more expensive than most anywhere in the U.S. and they have no voice in the process. They cannot even negotiate with an industry on their own about setting up a plant on the island. It must be through a board set up by congress to manage the island’s affairs. One thing I found particularly interesting was that for 8 days Puerto Rico was actually an independent nation. Spain gave them independence, but the U.S. took it away 8 days later at the end of the Spanish American War. Currently, there are roughly 5 million Puerto Rican Americans living in the U.S and 3.5 million living on the island. All are American citizens but only one group can actually vote in the presidential elections, those who reside in the U.S. In fact, according to their governor, a U.S. citizen cannot even submit an absentee ballot from the island, though they can from practically anywhere else in the world.
My point is this; there are current culture norms in this country that have worked against immigrant and minority groups throughout its history and still is today. While I tire of their rhetoric I also tire of this country’s claim’s of greatness, fairness, and exceptionalism while I know that, in reality, there is a great deal of a lack of greatness, unfairness, and a lack of exceptionalism in abundance in America today. I am not pointing to anyone person, it is a cultural norm that exists, but it does not mean that it is right. They are allowed to fester until there are these little explosions and then we try to stuff to back into their places by appeasement rather actually trying to correct the situations. We are going through a crisis in this country that is only just getting started for a fairly long run. Donald Trump will get to appoint another Supreme Court justice and the delicate balance of the court will shift squarely to the right for decades to come, so this process will actually get worse. The only way that those who are not white male anglo saxon Christians, and fairly well off financially are in for a pretty rough ride.
You’ve got that right Bill but racism goes both ways.
A similar thing happened to me Mike. A black man was given a top slot on the list because he was black not because he was more qualified than the rest of us. Black people want equality they say but they really don’t. What they want is preferential treatment because of their race. I’m sick of it as well. I used to be a liberal but no more. Now I’m an independent who is sick of political correctness.
Once again, I have to repeat and to insist that being wronged doesn’t make you right and arrogating the privilege to speak for the oppressed doesn’t give you the privilege of suppressing alternate views, even from other members of the same group. One might think they’re claiming the right to speak for all black people. Demagoguery.
She’s not someone I like, but although I don’t much agree with the College Inquisition, the presumption of evil and stereotyping of non-africans, the right never to be challenged or insulted or offended in one’s safe spaces. or the “white privilege” trope I’ve had too much personal experience of complaining against truly offensive professors and being rebuffed sternly about “freedom” i once had a professor who wrote books denying the “holocaust” and the school basically said, go to hell, he has tenure. Is that part of the attitude of the BLM people? that Only black lives matter? I’ve been called a racist for mentioning that because after all Jews are white so they can’t be oppressed.
I see the issue as the rise of separatism and mutual contempt ( call it racism) and more disturbingly the rise of “we don’t care about racism except as it applies to us” I’m tired of being labelled as a racist for simply being a humanist and so have no further sympathy for that whole generation of self pitying, self-absorbed and smugly unpleasant people. I have given generously to organizations supporting civil rights but I no longer do. After all I need now to be ashamed of having money and so I will keep it hidden henceforth. It’s my American privilege, after all.
I agree with you Glenn. I am a victim of what is known as “reverse discrimination.” A young black woman, who had nowhere near the qualifications I had, filed an EEOC suit to force our employer to give her a job she didn’t deserve because she was black, a “protected” group. The fact is you cannot discuss the unfairness of racial discrimination when the discriminators are black, because if you do you are branded a racist, regardless of your motives. I support the college in its firing of this woman, who has no business whatsoever teaching our young. In the eyes of some I am now a racist because I dared to make such a statement. I’m so tired of it.
Boy, that is a tough one. There is the free speech issue to consider but, there is also the professional responsibility to not push forward a message that is counter to the school’s stated message of non racism. If I had been president of that institution I would have simply taken her out of the classroom for at least a semester and given her and administrative assignment to get her out of the public eye and time for this to blow over. Then put her on probationary status and allowed her to hang herself. She may well win this lawsuit.
I must disagree Bill. Free speech isn’t a guarantee of immunity from all things. While she may be free to say what she thinks in a public forum, privately there may be consequences and she suffered them. Her irresponsible remarks cost her here job because they cost her credibility. The school did the right thing.
I appreciate your position Lyndon, I really do, and had she chosen to give the same rant from her position as a faculty member to one of classes I would agree. But, we will agree to disagree on this since her interview was not delivered as a spokesperson from the school, nor did she imply that it was a position of the school it seems to cross the line to where a state institution, and thereby the state can interfere with private speech and thoughts. Also, I was speaking from a position as a school administrator who take a more path of least resistance to avoid litigation.
